I feel qualified to answer this one. Bombay sapphire is the only way to go.

The only appropriate mixer is tonic. I prefer canada dry to schweppes.

To save some cash, just go with a 1/5 of bombay. If you make it thru that, the least expensive vodka w/ juice will be fine.
this is true. Tangueray works too, but Bombay is the best.

this.
Gin & Tonic is the finest drink known to man.

and this.

Stop all this faggy time does it taste bad, does it taste like christmas trees, does it make me sick talk. Drink gin mixed w/ tonic. That is the only acceptable mixture. Not tang, not sierra mist, not pepsi. Tonic or Straight. Bombay is the only way to go, however you are poor so go to the store and by anything that says gin on it (not flavored) and then drink it. Its pretty easy. End/thread.

I would also say that, while tonic is preferred, it is also acceptable to mix gin with a little vermouth.

Gin and tonic is indeed the finest drink known to man. ESPECIALLY on a hot summer day....nothing better. Bombay is great, Beefeater is good, and Gordons will do if you need it to be cheap. Buy limes.

If you have some extra $$$, buy a bottle of Hendricks Gin. It is very lightly flavored with cucumber. Replace your limes in your G&T with cucumber, and you will have one of the best drinks you have ever tried. Amazing.

Don't over think it. Get gin, mix with tonic water over ice, squeeze a lime in it. Best mixed drink out there.

If you're not a regular gin drinker it won't matter what kind you buy.

You don't know how to drink, your whole generation.

My generation? We drink because it's good, because it feels better than unbuttoning your collar. Because we deserve it.

We drink because its what men do.

Thinking I'm going to get the Gordon's gin 750ML mixed with Sprite and Cranberry. The tonic and lime mix is tempting but probably not going to happen tonight. Real short on cash right now. Start gaining money again in two weeks so will definitely go with that later in the year.

There is London Dry Gin... should I go with that or just the regular?

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Tangueray is my favorite and another good one is Plymouth. If your taste buds like a dry gin then Bombay is the best.

Seriously, don't mix gin with sprite and cranberry. It won't be good.

Excellent choice. Then afterwards, you and your girlfriends can change your tampons and braid each other's hair.

Sprite and cranberry juice? And don't cite being poor, because a bottle of tonic is 99 cents. Sprite and cranberry juice will cost three bucks.

It's similar in color. That's about it.

Unless you get Bombay Sapphire, which looks nothing like Vodka (unless you put blue Gatorade in it).

I get Beefeater. Then again, about the only time I drink gin is with Long Island or Tennessee Iced Teas. I did have it with Mountain Dew once - it was surprisingly good.

A really good mix is gin and Dr. Pepper. Mix it just like a beam and coke. It might be a little too sweet for some people, but it is oh so good and oh so addictive.

So I didn't know tonic was that cheap... Another problem I thought I would encounter was keeping ice in it. Don't think it will be possible walking around campus town.

If it tastes good I'll drink it.

Not exactly sure.
If you are out walking around use vodka, doesn't have much smell. Can dump it in a bottle with lemonade and you'll be good.

Tangueray and tonic is my pref.

Seasoned gin drinker here. Highly recommend Seagrams and tonic. Bombay is too expensive, most others that are cheaper taste bad. A little wedge of lime, or a little bit of lime juice.

I'm actually getting drunk on Beefeater and Tonic right now. Can't go wrong with a slice of lime in it either.

If you want to make a martini then I would go with Bombay Saphire. Don't be afraid of vermouth in the martini.

For a gin and tonic I would vote for Tanqueray Rangpur gin. Has more of a citrus taste and not quite so heavy on the juniper. My favorite thing for G&T is to use both fresh limes and lemons. The lemon balances out the lime and is really refreshing.

Cyguy - after all this wonderful advice - what did you end up with? Quite honestly, gin can be a rather acquired taste. Nothing wrong with all those who recommended Bombay, Tanqueray. Stats is spot on with Hendricks, especially in the summer/warm months. A little known and rather inexpensive option is Boodles, and it's not bad at all. Someone suggested the Seagrams family of gins - yes indeed. Seagrams lime is quite nice. And if you ever get to Montana, Silvertip is a quite refreshing and very clean and crisp gin. If only they distributed to Iowa...
