I'm big on gin n tonics but am curious about gin martinis. Anybody have tips or a certain vermouth to try?

There is no such thing as a gin martini. A martini is gin and vermouth. Period. Any vodka-containing mixtures should be labeled as vodka martinis. Anyone who disagrees is wrong.

Also, it's tough to compare Bombay and Tanq because they're such different creatures. Bombay is pretty dry, without a lot of coloration to the basic juniper-ish taste, whereas Tanq has all kinds of floral flavors mixed in that highlight and enhance. I wouldn't say one's better than the other, but they do different things, and it's kind of mood dependent which one is the better choice. I personally prefer Tanq in martinis, but that's because I normally don't use a lot of vermouth and want some more flavor notes to consider.

MMmmm... Gin.

1. Tanqueray, and not the regular Tanqueray but Tanqueray Rangpur.

2. Bombay.

3. Tanqueray, the regular.

4. Beefeater

And always have with tonic and a little bit of lime/lime juice.

Gin is a lot like whiskey in the way that different brands can taste quite different. You have to try a few until you find the one you like. And if you feel the need to cover up the taste, just go back to rum and coke. The only ways I drink gin is with tonic, in a rickey (club soda and sweetened lime juice) and in a martini. I use just a little vermouth and a jalapeno stuffed olive.

Gilbey's gin 1.75 L (tx fifth) for $16 is a great value and great taste. Mix with tonic or water and always lime wedge. The bottled lime juice sucks and never mix gin with anything else. If you go with water, added plus of hyrdration while you enjoy your beverage.

My go to is regular Bombay. Generally I drink it in a Gimlet (Gin and Lime on the rocks). I also drink it with grapefruit juice or with Simply Limeade (which was made to be consumed this way IMO)
