Philosophical question: Does it make a difference if she had killed him while he was raping her? Why is it not ok (immediately?) after? If she thought he was going to do it again, isn't it still in the act?

Not to me it doesn't matter. She should be able to lethally defend herself while he's trying to rape her, while he's raping her or after he rapes her.

I had actually not heard of this story at all. Not sure how I missed it. I read the article after skimming it originally.
I originally read an article that referred to her trafficker as a 28 year old man who had not been charged. It did not list his name. I assume because if he is ever charged, trafficking is a federal offense. Hopefully the feds are looking at a wider ring and eventually that guy sees some justice, but it is certainly more swift with a 15 year old victim.

It seems to me the decision to try her as an adult was the most important one, and the worst one. Everything after that was a consequence of that horrible decision
I haven't followed the case that closely, but that was the first thing that jumped out to me.

That is mind-boggling to me.

Yep - it seems pretty clear any time he was around her he was a danger.

From a legal perspective, stand your ground laws apply to crimes being committed in the moment.....a person is justified in using reasonable force in circumstances that could lead to personal injury or loss of property.

That doesn't apply to retribution for previous injury or to prevent future injury; you have to have been depending yourself, someone else, or your property at the time you "stood your ground" for it to be considered a justifiable use of force.

It's too bad she just didn't lie and say she did it while he was raping her. Goes to show she probably wasn't trying to game the system.

It’s just so crazy. A man killed a teenager walking and he wasn’t punished. Two men in Georgia killed a runner and they almost didn’t even get charged.

This girl has been and continues to be punished.

And I think that even if you think her punishment is fair or not bad enough, you would agree that saddling her with 150k in debt after serving that punishment is crazy. How do you think a 20 year old with a GED and basically no family is going to pay off 150k?

This girl is now going to have a shot.
Well maybe she should have thought about that before she killed this guy and he couldn't continue on with his life and family and sex trafficking business. /s

Yes because that is exactly what people with ptsd from ongoing violent crime think about. FFS

I don’t think she should go back to prison, but it sounds like that’s a very high probability. The judge isn’t going to be please.

More info in the DM Register Link than KCCI. Register article was buried away in the crime & courts section.

Well not knowing if there are extenuating circumstances this seems like a poor decision.

She wants to get out and spend that money people gave her. Can't blame her.

Yeah. Who knows… It sounds like this isn’t the 1st time… But I just think there should be other alternatives.

Yeah I'm not willing to throw her under the bus, till more comes out. She's had a tough life.

Testifying
She's going to need a lot of psychological help and some guidance from a stable adult.
