I've found otherwise, in my experience. I didn't dip my shoulder, but I did develop a tendency to drop my hands at the plate if I was also playing golf at the same time. Dropping your hands is a flaw that can easily carry over from golf, especially if you also bar your arm (I didn't have this issue, but a lot of high school hitters do). I mean, what do you do with your golf swing? Your "guide" arm is basically straight, and then you bring your hands down. Big no-no for baseball.

Once I ditched golf in high school, I improved greatly in baseball. I admit I was never the most athletic guy on earth. I was a self-made athlete, not exceptionally gifted. And I could always do well at one if I focused on it, but wouldn't do very well at either if I was doing them at the same time. I chose baseball in high school, now that I'm no longer a player, I focus on golf.

Why would you drop your hands because of golf? You start with your hands lower, granted, but why else?

Depending on how far back you bring your hands on the load of your baseball swing, they can be relatively close to where they are at the top of your backswing. If that's the case, then it's not difficult to develop the habit of dropping your hands in baseball. Because in golf, the next thing you do with your hands from that position is bring them down towards the ball. It's a subtle flaw, but it has the same impact as dropping your shoulder. It's just not as obvious when you watch someone swing a bat.

I'll admit I didn't have the best golf swing in the world to start with, which played a factor (I didn't extend my left arm as much as I should have on my backswing much of the time), as it closed the gap between where my hands were in my "load" and where they were in my backswing.

Basically, your point is correct. If you're doing them both correctly, there's no issue at all. But an imperfection in one can lead to imperfections in the other, such is the case with many who do both, especially in high school, where almost no one does anything perfectly.

Is this what's known as thread derailment?

We now have Hawkeye fans arguing about the baseball swing.

To the OP- You just saw a goofy-looking guy from Baghdad, Florida become the next big thing.

When you can put a 40 yard curve on a 150 yard wedge shot from the jungle, you could end up just like him (cue Bill Murray hitting the flowers).

I have to reply to the statement twice, that is how bad it is. Don't ever, ever listen to a THING farminclone ever says, just based on this post.

Awful. You are a terrible person and I hope to gawd the woman you are with is mentally incapable of making a sound decision.

Well I really ticked someone off!

I am just saying, I don't know many people that get golf lessons. Most of the people I play with just started with their dad or a buddy showing them around the course, and they seem to be just fine at golfing.

He obviously isn't trying to make the tour, just wants to go out and be decent at it and have some fun.

If he wants lessons, then go for it. This is just my personal opinion.

And you can't talk to me about making sound decisions....look at the team you cheer for!

Any recommended stores in the Ames/Des Moines area to help me pick out a good starter club set?

Honestly, your best bet for a cheap starter set of clubs might be Craigslist. Just did a quick check and saw a lot of stuff listed. Worth a shot, anyway. Can't think of anyplace retail-wise that would have anything reasonably priced.

I started to play golf and swung like a baseball player. I wish I would have taken lessons first. :twitcy:
