Does the Gyro stand count? It's great if you just met her that night. You can chit chat and get to know her while waiting in line, before taking her to your place.

Thanks for the suggestions. I pretty much always take her to places with TVs because I love sports, or to Battles because it's the best restaurant I know of. I think she wants to go someplace a little nicer. (which basically, I think, means less light and no TVs).

I'll probably suggest Cafe Shi and hope she goes for it and use the Spice as my second option.

I don't know why, but I'm not a big Italian guy, or else DeAngelos and Lucullan's would both be great.

I think the best date we've been before was at the Open Flame. I love that place. Probably too "backwoods-ey" for this occassion, though.

Go to Story City to the Cottage on Broad, you won't be disappointed. If you like to cook your own food, my wife and I always enjoy the Open Flame in Gilbert. These are two out of the ordinary great date spots.

Try Geangelo's in the Northern Lights Center north of Cub Foods. Good Italian and good price.

Good call on the Cottage...great food, nice surroundings. That would be a great place for a date.

They've all been said here already, but I'll add my vote for Lucullan's, Dublin Bay, and Olde Main.

I'll third (or fourth) The Spice and Cafe Shi. Both are nice, sit-down places with awesome food and decent prices. Great date places.

Cool story behind The Spice: The owner was a Vet Med grad back in the 70's (I think). He went back to Thailand after he graduated to work as a vet. About the time his kids were ready for college, he decided to move back to Ames when they went here. He recruited a chef from a big hotel over there and started the restaurant on Main St. His daughter is a design grad and did the decorating.

If you want a sure thing, there is only one way to go. Cook for her yourself. The best meals I've ever had were home cooked. Make something elaborate while she is there so the smells of preparation are overpowering. I promise you will not be disappointed. Whatever you do good luck.
