Another way of putting it: In all of Rhoads' seasons, the average player rating for his recruiting classes, according to 247, ranged from 0.8126 (in 2011) to 0.8264 (in 2014). Campbell's first class in 2016 had an average player rating of 0.8249, which would have been the second best class of Rhodes' entire tenure. Since then the average player rating was 0.8390 in 2017, 0.8481 in 2018, and 0.8526 in 2019.

It is also worth noting that Rhoads' 2014 class was the highest rated class in school history at the time. Therefore, Campbell has welcomed the school's highest rated class in each of the last three seasons with each freshmen class beating the previous classes' mark. Campbell's worst recruiting class, which came in his first season, is still Iowa State's fifth best class ever according to the 247 average player rating.

NOTE: 247's recruiting rankings go back to 1999. So they include Campbell, Rhoads, Chizik, and the second half of the McCarney era.

Thanks for sharing!

Always good to add experienced talent. I think he looks similar to Matthew Eaton... a little shorter though. I love Milton, Jones, but nice to get an experienced WR that is over 6 feet tall. Think he definitely adds immediate help and gives the young guys a chance to develop.
To us fans this is good news. I always wonder what the younger guys at that position think when a grad transfer comes in. I'd think they'd be a little disappointed that they'll be one more guy down on the ladder. But I guess that is Campbell's job to sell it to the guys and get them on board.

I think I saw recently that Iowa was recruiting an Australian punter. They can certainly have ours. He gifted the Hawks two pathetic shanks.

Yeah in such a tight game, a bad punt can be all you need to get yourself in a hole and not climb out. Iowa's style is such that it's hard to come back on them.

I get it, I'm asking how a literal 4% difference in rating can yield such better results?

It's not 4%. The rating system is not based on percent. Have you ever seen a recruit rated .1475? No. Not even .5478. So you can't compare ratings and say one is just 4% higher. The overall range is much smaller than from 0 to 1. Hope that helps.

I think the Marchie Murdock comparison is a good one IMO. He's not Hakeem Butler because he's 4 inches shorter.

However, in the video clips above, it does appear he's mostly a deep threat. I was hoping to see a little more elusiveness from him, but I guess that's what Milton and Jones are for. Pettway looks like a good possession receiver IMO, but not a guy that's going to break a lot of tackles or make people miss.
