Mtown - were you talking to me with the looking up post? If so, no, am in Ankeny (but it's a short drive for a decent guitar player :) ).To those looking for a starter guitar, I'd play until you find one you like. There are tons out there and you could find a cheap one that sounds and feels really good to you. If you're a little more seasoned, then you can find one that's worth a little more. It takes work. Best thing I would say is to do some exercises (scales, running up and down the fret board, doing different chord progressions with different strum patters) every day with it as well take some songs you like and try and learn them (this keeps everything fun and fresh). There are plenty of youtube clips of people trying to teach you songs and different ways to play. Find one that works for you. Get into it a little bit and then if you still like it take some lessons for the theory of it (lessons are fairly expensive - when I took lessons eons ago, they were like $15/a half hour which adds up quick).

I've been looking for some people around DSM to play with, played for 6 years and took a year off from playing seriously and need some motivation again...

Basically my set-up is this:

-Audacity (free) on my computer
-Behringer audio interface to run from USB to the sound board
View attachment 26257
-Small Behringer sound board with two microphones on opposite sides of the closet
View attachment 26258

Doesn't get much simpler.. besides just recording everything right into the computer microphone.

Cool. You should look into Reaper. Its free for like the first 60 days and then they just encourage you buy it but still allow you to use for free. Its only like $60. I used to use Audacity but you can have a lot more fun with reaper.

Is there a pretty good selection of piano and bass? That'd be two things I'm really interested in messing around with.

Its kind of confusing when you first start it, but Reaper itself doesn't have those things (they're called VST plugins when they are computer generated and not played by you yourself). You have to download them into Reaper. Independence has a bunch of VST instruments, but the free version I use is somewhat limited. There is a decent sounding piano and bass though. There are a bunch of other different free VST's you can get though. Their is some really good free synths but they take a lot of tinkering to get the desired sounds.

Very interesting. I'll have to check that out. Have always wanted to get piano in my stuff especially.

Based on your price range, consider Sigma. In Des Moines Pro Music has started carrying them as well as Uptempo. Play a few until one grabs you. Anyone a base player...if so, Pro Music has a terrific selection these days.

OK guitar players .... guitar noob question. I have always wanted to play and picked up a nice used Taylor 314CE a while back. What's the best way to go here ... formal lessons? Online course? Give me your thoughts/recommendations.

If you're determined to teach yourself the internet is a great help. Also there is a video game called Rocksmith (NOT GUITAR HERO) that you plug a real electric guitar (any electric guitar) into your PS3/Xbox/Computer and learn to play. They have lessons on it and a bunch of songs you can learn, and like any other video game more songs you can buy online.

There is a lot out there on Youtube and, once you know some basic chords, Ultimate Guitar is great. A few lessons wouldn't hurt as you don't want to start out with a "bad habit" that might hinder your progression.

Love my US made Tele. Really versatile.

Ive got 2 primary guitars, my '72 Tele Thinline Re-issue (my slide guitar, Mex) and an '06 Delux Strat (Am.) with noise cancelling PUs. Love 'em both. But to the OP, the only real answer is to just play a ton of guitars, see what feels the best in your price range. I also find that it's usually worth bumping up to the $500 to $600 range in terms of sound and quality (at least in my experience). Pro Music is a great place to look, even Riemans is OK. I try to stay away from chain stores, but you might find something you like.
