I hear you here buddy, I grew up in Eastern Iowa and thats Hawk country, I didnt know any better. I started Vet School in 2000, we happened to go 9-3 and I was hooked. I think Iowa went 1-10 that year. The transition was quick and I never looked back. ISU could go 0-12 for the next 100 years and I would still be a Cyclone. Go State
In fact I could be 1 of the biggest Hawk haters on this sight. Tavern Hawks are the worst, they arent convinced that there is actually a school of higher education in Iowa City.

The problem with both fan-bases is that there are too many fans who obsess over the sport. Some, especially my hawk friends literally let the sport control whether they've personally had a good year or not. Not slamming ISU-Iowa, there are way more worse rivalries in the sporting world that would make ISU-Iowa look like friendly neighbors.

Really?

Could use a lot of European club soccer rivalries, but you don't have to go any further than Auburn-Alabama to find a much more heated rivalry. Last time I checked we weren't poisoning others trees or assaulting the guy who did it.

We also aren't burning the score of the Iron Bowl into the lawn of a fan of the losing team. That's been known to happen with the Iron Bowl.

I grew up as a big cyclone fan. As a kid all I did was talk about Iowa State. Frankly, being a cyclone fan was and still remains a part of my identity. But some how just because I chose to go to school at the University of Iowa means I have to abandon my rather deep loyalties to the cyclones?

As I have explained to numerous of my hawkeye friends, this is really idiotic. I remain a huge, diehard, season ticket holder fan, who can't wait to introduce my 3 month old son to cyclone football (to the extent that is possible). I am proud of my U of I education, but it hasn't changed who I cheer for when Iowa State plays Iowa. The only thing that has really changed is I have gone from hating Iowa and rooting for whoever they are playing to actually cheering for Iowa when they are not playing the Cyclones.
This guy makes a lot of sense, and is almost exactly my situation (except for having season tickets and a 3 month old). I grew up a Cyclone and nothing will change that. I can't even fathom cheering for the Hawks over the Cyclones.
