Iowa State has zero chance to make the playoffs if they lose to Iowa. That's even more of a reason for powerful people in charge to keep them out in favor of a 2 loss SEC team.

That's just ignorant. Say it's a close loss to what turns out to be a good Iowa team. We run the table otherwise including beating OU twice. You think a close loss to a good rival will keep us out of the CFP? That's just stupid.

The point was losing early vs. losing late and at least losing to a decent opponent.

ISU would likely need to be undefeated with like 1 close win to get considered so it's fairly moot.

I’m embarrassed for people that think Iowa is the biggest game of the year. Forget about the (lol) playoffs. It’s about trying to win the big 12. Since Iowa isn’t in the big 12 the game is one of our least important games.
This. I absolutely loathe Iowa with a passion of 10,000 suns. And I will be so royally pissed off if we somehow blow that one. ToE is a big game for many “other” reasons and is important But it’s not our biggest game. Not even f*cking close.

Win the championship and miss the playoffs because of an Iowa loss. The odds of beating OU twice aren't that good. So even if we do win the Big 12 we likely have 2 losses anyway.

And I'd take that any day of the week and anyone hoping for a good outcome for realignment should too.

I agree that it's better to lose early. ISU will still get the shaft vs any 1 or 2 loss team like a Notre Dame or Oregon.

No one thinks that game is the biggest game of the year other than Iowa fans and trolls. And probably the occasional person who claims to be a fan but literally doesn’t pay attention to the games or even scores through out the season.

In Week 2, no less.

Every game is huge this year because of the expectations. But a Week 2 non-con loss to a top 20 team isn’t a catastrophe, especially if you don’t move the goalposts to “playoffs or bust.” We’re not even the favorite to win our conference. Put that into perspective before we talk about a rivalry game ruining our playoff hopes.

IF you were talking about UNI, I might agree. Iowa? naw. They could end up being a top 15 team (I doubt it, but we're talking hypotheticals here). A 1 loss conference champion, with their 1 loss being a "quality" loss will not be kept out of the CFP.

Fact: I'm more nervous for UNI than Iowa.

UNI was bad in their spring season, hasn't been that great for a while, but watch them roll some freshman from a 2A school out there just running around slinging it and ISU screwing around on offense to keep it weird.

Iowa State was literally in the conversation last year after losing to Louisiana AND Oklahoma State, before losing in the Big12 Championship.

It depends on everyone else’s record/losses, but a one loss Iowa State team would more than likely make it as long as it’s not a loss in the Big12 Championship.

It’s McElwain (or however you spell it) job to lose but from what I understand, expect them to play two QBs. And we know in cyclone country how well that typically goes.

They also have a transfer from Michigan st who is I guess serviceable but doubtful he’s anything special.

It stopped being the biggest game when we started competing with and beating ranked teams very regularly. Under Mac and CPR we'd beat Iowa, the bad teams on the schedule, and then get blasted by any ranked team we played. They'd complain about it and they weren't dreaming it up (although certain years they dreamed putting themselves in the category of ranked B12 teams, especially on team speed).

Back when Oklahoma blasted us by 30+ every year Iowa was our calendar circled biggest game because we really couldn't hang consistently. It's the same reason Iowa State is Iowa's biggest basketball game over the past decade or so, their program can't really hang but if they put all of their existence into one game where they donate their shoes at midcourt maybe they can hang for just one game. They aren't the worst program under Fran, but they have no real teeth. Ditto for ISU Mac/CPR eras, not a bad program but no teeth against the big boys.

It's not unique to Iowa and ISU. Every regional/local rivalry has this sort of thing.

They were in the conversation because it was a covid year and some teams only played like 5 games. The records were weird as hell.
