I could be wrong, but it looks to me like they are going to be charging him with murder. The obstruction warrant is a decoy to keep him from fleeing. The real charges will come when he is in custody.

I'm not sure on the typical penalties but it seemed like these guys where punished the way a normal person would be. Perhaps I'm wrong though.

Agreed, and I think in Burress and Vick's case you could argue that their celebrity status maybe hurt them legally. I think generally the more serious the case, the more being an athlete doesn't help. There's probably minor things though that athletes get away with more often than a normal person.
