Just trying to have a little fun. Paul had some huge wins, but after thinking, I don’t think he makes the list.

Are you intending to rank coaches or just list coaches that had ISU ranked at some point?

I was wanting to see the best ISU rankings in polls for each coach. There is a high probability that a bowl team in the 70’s would be ranked at some point in the season (Bruce and Majors). There were only half as many bowl games back then. Guessed on all. Not sure if there are any records or old Cyclones from the 70’s era who can contribute.

Wikipedia shows this information although some seasons don't have the 'ranking' category...I'd guess they weren't ranked.

I thought I posted this in thread, but apparently forgot the Send button.

Highest ranking for each coach on OP list, using AP poll:

Campbell: #7, 2021 preseason
McCarney: #9, 2002
Duncan: #11, 1981
Majors: #12, 1972
Bruce: #14, 1976
James Yeager: #18, 1938. (Per @VeloClone)

Other non-AP (not comprehensive)
Rhoads: #25 in coaches poll (plus BCS rank and Harris), 2012 (courtesy @2speedy1)

James Yeager had the 6-0 1938 Cyclones ranked #18 in the 31 OCT poll. Apparently they then lost since they dropped out and finished the season 7-1-1.

Smilin' Jim's team dropped out after beating Drake to go 7-0. Then came a tie against K-State (both teams missed a PAT), and loss against OU to finish the season.

History of ISUs kicking game failures go back for decades I see! Hope we don't step back too far this year after the kicking nirvana last year with Mevis.

They kept sending 2 safeties from the blindside putting Seneca in panic mode. Then our receivers were locked down at the LOS. It was a train wreck.

I believe on the first possession Seneca had Lane or Whitver wide open between corner and safety along the sideline, but missed him badly. That was our best play for the next 55 minutes.

That game is the reason I'm still in shock every time ISU competes with OU, let alone wins!

If I recall correctly it was a cold rainy day and Seneca had a hell of a time holding on to the football. That was when most of us learned that Seneca had small hands.

I had a friend at that game and she said OU was so fast they basically looked like they had 20 guys on the field.

When Stoops' teams really put it together they were as dominant as anyone.

I blame the weather (bad rain seemed like every game after the #9 ranking).

When Stoops had Venables on staff they were so damn balanced.

Pop Warner went 8-2 once!
Unfortunately there were no rankings before 1935, when several of our best years were, under Warner, Williams, Ristine, and Mayser, after that it was not good until Majors.

Edit: Yeager and Stapleton had a few decent years in between there too. But were not sustained.

Yeah for Rhoads I think we made the coaches poll for one week in 2012 if I remember right.
