Crowd wasn't bad last night. It was good when we got on runs to make it close but we never got that turnover, big dunk, transition 3, etc at the right time to set it over the top. Instead we had a careless turnover, let them get an easy lay-up, or gave up an offensive board on a missed shot.

Final 4 caliber based on what? They lost in the first round the year before. How many teams do you consider to be final 4 caliber every year? Like 30? We were a top 15-20 team Fred's last year, and we were a top 15-20 last year, which means we should hopefully make the sweet 16 with a chance at going further, which is exactly what we did.
We had as much talent last year as maybe any ISU team ever with maybe the exception of the Tinsley years. Losing in the first round in Freds last year sucked but at least they had a good year. They were 25-9, second in the conference, and won the conference tournament. Take a lot of the same players with a new coach and go 23-12, tie for 5th in the league lose in the quarter finals of the big 12 tournament. Again, the sweet 16 was nice but in my mind they needed to get at least that far to call the year a success (which they did I guess).

Bottom line is that this team can play with anyone in the nation, but at times struggles with chemistry/playing iso-hero ball that they can also get beat by just about anyone; making them incredibly hard to watch. Couple that with the increase in ticket prices (guessing it would cost $80-100 to get a pair of uppers for last night), I'd rather just watch the game at home with a beer. I am optimistic about Prohm's future as a coach at ISU. Really like the pieces he is bringing in next year. Hopefully everyone he has brought in thus far (Long, Young, Lard, Carter) can stick around, put in the work, and continue to improve. Next year is going to be tough too....might just hang out in the Football forum for awhile because the negative nancy's that frequent hear after every loss are unbearable (Loyal forever true except when we lose then I am going to through a hissy fit). Fred ain't coming back, if you aren't able to see the hole Fred left the program in recruiting wise you're blind. It is basically a three year gap except for Donovan Jackson and Nick Weiler-Babb.

I was not surprised to see this thread pop up this morning, and I wasn't surprised at who the OP was either. Total overreaction.
Agree. People need to relax. We will be fine. We will be in the tournament and we will experience some Hilton Magic this year.

I hope so. I don't think it's anywhere near a lock, but the consensus around here prior to the start of conference play was that 9-9 or 10-8 was a likely finish, and that would probably good enough for a tourney bid. So really not much has changed since December. They're still undersized, they still run hot and cold, and they still look like a .500 team in the Big 12. I just don't get the fans that get all worked up from one game to the next. Let this thing play out.

I second this. I was yelling at the TV last night for the fans to stand up and make some noise. Hilton Magic is not the same since Fred left.

....cause the fans cheered because Fred was coach? If anything fans complained that Fred didn't have the Johnny court side inspirational magic.

A couple times Prohm turned to the crowd and raised his arms to ask the crowd to get involved, and there was minor reaction. Is that his fault that a lot of fans are more into their phone than the game?

The last time I paid big money to come to an ISU game and have good court side tickets for the KU game, the people "my age" behind me kept saying, "Sit down." You wouldn't have heard that in Johnny's era.

The big difference from this year to last year is Niang inspired his team, and the crowd, where this year, there is no "leader" who take over a game and be that on court inspiration.

In the 1st half it was the bench that got us back into the game. Naz was a hero back in the day, but he makes a lot of bone-headed mistakes, and is the clutch shooter he once was.

anyone that has any hope in this team doing anything remotely special is so delusional.
Wow. We have a ton of experience, and yes we've struggled at times, but you should never count these guys out. We can beat anyone anywhere. Once the tournament starts, I can promise teams don't want to play us.

Normally you'd have a redshirt junior or senior big man you've developed over a couple years. We had to settle for Holden and Bowie because it's what we could get with the lack of time (aka no time to develop someone). Freshman ready to play at a high level don't generally end up at Iowa State.

So it seems to me that T.J. Otzelberger, "one of the top recruiters in the nation" according to TJ's wiki page, was unable to secure any JC transfer to fill that void. Hence TJ is now coaching in South Dakota. Prohm has not wowed me a lot, but he also is not a complete failure. I do believe he is better than TJ would have been as a coach. I've been fearing this Niang-less season for quite a while (mostly because I believed it would also be without Monte and Naz). But that this team is so devoid of well developed players who have some height. That does concern me. Next season will be the true test for Prohm's Cyclones.

Yeah, teams with a solid starting 5 and ZERO depth have Final Four written all over them. Jameel mailed it in mid season and that killed our team. Other than that yeah, pretty much all Prohm's fault.

It amazes me how some have decided that this is all on Prohm. If you watched the game, you know that Naz had a horrible game, Deonte was as much "bad Deonte" as "good Deonte", and Monte looked overmatched. Check out the shooting and t/o stats for these folks - and Naz had lots of open looks that he didn't hit and crazy t/o's while he drove. Regardless of who's coach, we're not going to win games when these three play like that.

I'd like to see Prohm give Naz fewer minutes when he's so off like he has been the last couple games. But, I can understand why he feels he needs to roll with these guys, as they're his Sr. leaders. If they can't become more consistent, the wild ride will continue.

I'm not suggesting Prohm is perfect, but the memorializing of Freddie as the best coach ever is crazy. Freddie was THE right coach at the time and did wonderful things for the program. He followed his dream, so good for him, but he left a tough spot for Prohm with his "missed elephants" recruiting. Let's see how Prohm looks in a couple years.
