, People said the same thing about the ISU football program before CMC arrived. Dumpster fire, coaching graveyard, can't recruit there, etc. NU has never won an NCAA tournament game, the only major conference program with that claim. The state is starving for any success and the expectations are not sky high. If he takes them to the NCAA tourney and wins one game, they will anoint him king. Fred is more than capable of accomplishing that feat, although I would rather he didn't.

Nobody said that.

@Jayshellberg How can you disagree that NU basketball has ever been anything other than garbage? Serious question.

They stink.

From Wikipedia: "Nebraska has the unfortunate distinction of being the only major conference program to have never won a game in the NCAA Tournament, and did not even make the tournament until 1986. Much of the team's modest success....."

I mean, when that is how an impartial fact-based website describes you, it can't be all peaches and cream.
I agree that they have always been garbage. I am just saying that with the right coach, the program can be raised to a level of respectability. If they are willing to pay Fred's $4 million a year and are patient enough (Miles had seven years) Fred will win a NCAA there, imo.

You mean like Matt Campbell taking over Iowa State? We were about like Nebraska basketball. We had 3 bowl wins all time when he took over (and 2 of those were as 6 win teams/low tier bowls). We were one of if not the worst programs of and major conference team. A lot of similarities of the two. Also, just like our football program, Nebraska basketball has had a high level of fan support, even with the lack of success and they are spending more $$ too than they used to.

Yeah, our football conference championships and CFP appearances under CMC have been piling up.

I love the guy and it's nice to not completely suck at football, but let's not pretend ISU is Alabama.

ISU football is a lousy comparison to NU basketball.

Or Billy Kennedy made it so. Both Prohm and Otz stepped into one of the best two jobs in their respective conferences. Both good coaches although Steve has achieved more. But neither one of them had to “build” something from scratch.

Yeah, except after year two. Originally it would have been year one: with a thin roster left behind

Technically Nick was a TJ recruit (and a legacy from the Hoiberg era).

Prohm can't win with his own players. Pathetic.

Even has to bring in Naz after the game to get the locker room back.

You know damn well one way or another this will rear its head around at the end of the season regardless.

People outside the state of Iowa were sure saying that about ISU football. All I am saying is that just because NU basketball may not appear to be a desirable job on the surface, I think the right coach can turn the program around and Fred would not be crazy to take the job, especially for $4 million a year.

Oh do tell pop jr.

The team left behind has one true post player that didn’t like to practice. No other front court depth. Plus it was supposed to be Monte’s last year and naz would have graduated then too.

The second year would have had two returning players, Matt Thomas and Deonte Burton. The scouts told Monte coming back would be good for him, and naz had his recovery.

It was very likely year two was the rebuild and the end of the Hoiberg years.

And again, of course no one saw Nader as an nba player going into his sr year.

How is it lousy? Did I say Iowa State was Alabama now in football? Weird that you make that comparison. Do you think Nebraska in order to be considered successful has to be like Duke or UNC? Getting into the tournament regularly doesn’t mean Nebraska has to elevate to blue blood status.

A game or the whole thing? They have pumped money into basketball and the fans pack the place. Pinnacle Bank Arena is very nice.

Hoiberg to Nebraska wouldn't be in the best interest of Iowa State for local recruits. With his name, it would be another competitor to some of the upper tier recruits in the midwest region. It'd be better for Nebraska to stay where it is so there is one less school to compete with for the tier of recruits we go after.

Somewhat agree. I bet TJ would jump at the Nebr job and we'd fight him for recruits too. If its a bigger name than TJ, but similar to a Hoiberg, I'm guessing we'd have the same issue. Also, if Hoiberg went to say a UCLA, I think he'd still come after midwest top recruits. But probably agree with you overall.

Kansas phog has a thread ... some there discussing how Fred at Neb affects ISU recruiting ... so not just us thinking about this.

Also speculating that Kansas and Neb will start playing each other due to Fred and Self palship.

It’s possible JP didn’t help the cause very much.

If we had ****** history like Nebraska, anyone who dared to say we were a sleeping giant would be laughed off thd board.

I don’t think it does. We don’t really go after Iowa guys. Fred never did either.

Wrong again. Nobody outside the state of Iowa was saying anything about ISU football.

It's a lot of dough and Fred has shown us all that that is important to him. I agree, he should take the money. Tuition at ku and msu is pretty expensive.

I guess failing miserably and being the laughing stock of the NBA had it's advantages though, it opened all sorts doors like a 7 year prison sentence in the state of Nebraska at a school that has been historically bad at basketball. At least he will be able to score King Kong's, Don and Millies, Amigos and Runza at will. He may even know where to score Dr. Wells if he lives in Nebraska long enough.

Wouldn’t love this but the guy wants to coach and be close to family so I guess I could see it.
A poster on that 4th rate hak forum said it would be a huge “FU to ISU”. Anyone who thinks that does not know Fred or his relationship with this university.
