I have a home theater setup that consists of the following components:

Sony XBR65X850D 4k TV
Pioneer VSX-520K Receiver

I had a Panasonic DMP-BD35 blu-ray player that i believe is starting to die (would get choppy in the middle of random movies and would make a ton of noise when a disk was loading after being inserted.

I switched to a Samsung BD-E5300 blu-ray player I had in another spot in the house. I thought I would just be able to unplug cables and plug in the new player as it is (HDMI from Blu-ray to the Receiver and HDMI from the receiver to the TV). I tried this and got a picture, but no sound.

I then tried hooking the blu-ray player directly to the TV via HDMI and having the sound go from the TV to the receiver VIA optical cables. I did this and the sound and picture came out fine, however when the blu-ray went from the previews to actually loading the main menu/movie the picture and sound would go away. I ended up unplugging the HDMI cable to the TV and re-plugging it in. This fixed the problem, but is very annoying. Am I doing something wrong, because this should not happen?

I don't know if this applies to your TV but when I try to use older components, I have them go to the non 4k HDMI connection. The HDCP 2.2 doesn't play well with some older connections.

Also check the audio setting on the blu ray player and try out the PCM option.

Long shot, but I had an old blu-ray player that was acting weird with the sound on certain movies and not others. I found a firmware update for it (I never used to do those) and it fixed it.

You're sure it's not the receiver? Have you tried another HDMI input? My AVR won't work with one of its inputs, but is find with the rest.

I have tried other inputs on the receiver and same result. I was using the same input as my old bluray player that worked. Just seems odd to me. I also tried different audio output options on the bluray player such as bitstream and pcm. I also played with the downmix settings.

I don’t have an answer to your question. But noticed your tv model. It’s very similar to mine. I have a Sony XBR65X900E. I purchased it last November. The picture went out last week. They sent a repair man. The picture is shot, so they are sending me a new tv. Hopefully it’s not a sign of what’s to come.

I had a similar issue with my Pioneer VSX-920. I took it to a local shop that handled the Pioneer warranty repairs and they said there were a lot of issues with the HDMI boards on the VSX model. That shop is no longer around in Des Moines unfortunately and I believe the closest Pioneer repair shop is in Omaha.

Good point about HDCP 2.2. Have you tried updating the firmware on your Blu-Ray player? A newer movie on an older Blu-Ray player that was connected to a newer TV could cause issues.
