Lived in the same house in Dubuque for 19 years. Then Ames for a little under 8 years (Friley for a year, apartment on Steinbeck for 4 years, apartment on Jewel Dr, townhome on Emerald Dr for a year, back to an apartment on Steinbeck for a year). Then Ankeny for 5.5 years (apartment for a year, first house for 4.5 years). Now in a house in Overland Park and have been here for 7 months.

Birth to HS Graduation: 7
During college & internship: 8 (incl dorms, freddy, summer on-campus housing, off-campus, and two different out of state internships)
Post college: 6 (back to Ames, 4 times when I left Ames (all in same area, just different apts/houses rented), and now to where I am in grad school)
Plus my parents have since bought new houses

If we're just talking towns, lived in 7 through HS; not a moving military kid but was close to it. Dad retired after full service when I was a toddler and Mom finished up and retired in the Reserves when I was in 5th grade or so. Ames + 2 out of state internships (I stayed in Ames except for those internships) during college. Ames, two towns in Rockies, one town on east coast since graduating from Iowa State.

Since HS, the longest I stayed in one dwelling has been two years, which was my last lease and now my current lease as well but this one I'm hoping to sublease the last summer of it.

Not counting stuff where I was to young to remember... 28 times. Shortest was for a month, longest was for five years. Only US time zones I haven't live in at one point or another are Hawaii and Mountain.

  • 19 moves.
  • 5 states.
  • 10 cities/towns
  • Haven’t moved since 2006.

I don’t count temporary stopovers “back-home” (twice) or moving within dorm at Iowa State (once).

When I think about my move-stats, it seems like I should’ve lived in numerous cities throughout the U.S. and exotic destinations elsewhere. Unfortunately, quite a bit involved short moves to a different residence mainly for employment/relationship circumstance, nothing outside-of-U.S., and no warm-weather/coastal areas.

Boo!

Amusing aside (to me, at least): I had a cat who lived with me for about 17 years. He experienced 12 moves during his lifetime. I’m sure he loved every minute of those migrations. (Insert Pirate)

-Childhood home in Mason City to teenage home in Mason City

-Mason City to Ames. (Won't count each apartment move because it was three different apartments in 4 years)

-Ames to Carmel, Indiana (suburb of Indianapolis)

-Carmel, Indiana to Honolulu, Hawaii

So not that many times if I don't include apartment moves in Ames.

It's a lot, but I've never really added it all up before...

*1st home was in Nevada (town, not the state)
*Rochester, Minnesota, apartment
*Dodge Center, Minnesota, acreage
*back to Nevada for kindergarten
*another place in Nevada for 1st grade
*Colo, Iowa acreage from 2nd through 10th grade
*Napa, California temporarily until we figured out a permanent spot
*Calistoga, California for last two years of high school
*Santa Rosa, California right after HS with parents
*own apartment in Santa Rosa
*another apartment in Santa Rosa
*another apartment in Santa Rosa
*ANOTHER apartment in Santa Rosa
*Iowa Falls with my dad when I gave up on California (as my parents had done)
*Iowa City dorm to try and finish college
*Iowa City to work that following summer
*Iowa Falls after transferring to Iowa State (yay!)
*St. Anthony acreage (NW Marshall County) with my dad again while finishing ISU
*back to Nevada when I started working full-time
*current home in Ames for the last 12 years

Guess that makes 20 moves! But we're looking to buy a newer home in Ames this year, so #21 is looming.

I dont consider moving in college really moving because I had a tub of clothes and a computer. If it fits inside a car it's not really a headache like we think of moving.

Home to dorm
Dorm to frat
Frat to apt
Apt to mtown apt
Apt to old house
old house to current house.

Only the move from college apt to Motown apt and then old house to new house really sucked, though.

**** we end up owning a lot of crap.

Omaha
Hometown to Ames.

In Ames..friley, freddie court (2 different buildings because a pipe burst in one), apt on Stanton, apt near hickory park.

Omaha, first apt also had a pipe burst, moved from second apartment to house with bestie, from her house in with boyfriend at the time, from that apartment back to hometown.

Now back in Omaha.

traipsing thru the treetops
States lived in: 6 (CA, TX, WA, FL, KS, IA)
State to state moves: 7 (lived in WA twice & CA twice)
City to city moves (sometimes within the same state): 12
Homes lived in: 16 (note: 12.5 in current, 20 in the one just previous, so I've finally found stability!)
Shortest consecutive time in a state: birth to 6 months (family lived there five years though)
Longest consecutive time in a state: 33 years (1983 to present in Iowa).

None of this is military related.
