We could very well start out 5-0. only to get killed the last half... sneak out 2 wins somwhere in there and then i'm happy... or, we tank the season, start fresh with a new staff and hope for the best. rinse, wash, repeat.

4 or less - changes need to be made.
6 or more - stay the course for at least one more year.
5 - the toughest call. Increasing the wins by 3 would probably be one of the biggest turnarounds in division 1. Tough to make a change then. However, it would depend upon the eye test of actual performance improvement during the year.

If I were AD, I would, if at all possible, retain the staff are keep reducing the cost of the buyout. Therefore, I could justify 5 being the critical number.

How many games does the team have to win this fall for you to personally believe things are heading in the right direction and the Iowa State football program is in good hands with Rhoads?

(Regardless of what you expect to happen.)

To adhere strictly to the premise of this OP my answer is six. Six tells me we're in good hands.

To me it's all about our first 4 games. If we go 0-4 or 1-3 we need to fire Rhoads and promote mangino to interim hc.

I'm an older guy. Started sitting in the stands (watching Cyclone football) in 1969. Long ago, I promised myself that if we could just hire a coach that would make us competitive in the Big 8/Big 12, I would continue to be a loyal fan. I can not tell you how many times that games were literally over by the 8 minute mark of the first quarter. We got blown out (on a regular basis) in parts of the 70's, most of the 80's, most of the 90's, and more than occasionally since 2000. I want to see winning Cyclone football as much as anyone; but, for the most part, Paul Rhoads has had us in games since he came here. Sure we still get some lopsided games; but, nothing like I've seen in the past.

so what your saying is that Iowa State has NEVER had a decent coach then?
Iowa State has had a couple of decent coaches over the years.

1) Pop Warner (yes that Pop Warner) was 18-8 coaching at Iowa State.
2) Clyde Williams (whom the old stadium was named after) was 33-14 at Iowa State.
3) More recently, Earl Bruce finished 36-32 at Iowa State and coached the Cyclones to 2 bowl games.

He should be canned on the spot when we lose to UNI.

Pollard will probably come out and give an impassioned missive about all he's up against. Then we'll beat Iowa and lose out.

I understand that its not easy to consistently win in CFB, but, any half decent coach should be able to recruit, develop, and coach players that are able to compete in their conference and win 6 games. We should be able to get 2 or 3 wins just from our non con schedule every year. That means 3 or 4 wins in the Big 12. I know the Big 12 is tough, but we cant consistently beat Kansas, Tech, and get an upset or two most years?

ISU must have a looooong list of successful coaches and it's just this Rhoad's fellow that is the stinker. You might want to look at that list of coaches... they all came from success or left later for success, but it didn't translate to ISU in most cases. Even in the successful cases (Majors and Bruce) the W/L records were not astonishing. Improvements in facilities may eventually pay dividends with recruits, but you had better tame your expectations. Playing coaching roulette is not the answer here.

based on the early "light" schedule id say at least 7. Id also say I would need to see an offense actually consistanly be good at something! Some good qb play, the ability to run when needed or even when not needed. Routes that go beyond the first down marker every play not just on third downs... You know the things the top teams in the country do all the time.

I'm gonna say six to feel things are going in the right direction with Rhoads. I'd actually be fairly pleased with five in terms of where things are headed, but I don't think that's enough for CPR to keep his job. Depending on who we hire and what their schemes are, five would make me excited for the future though.
