How many years before program is back into dormancy?

All depends on the next hire. Does JP want to maintain some semblance of momentum in the program or go for cheap?

i get people being upset at posters who are angry and mad at Fred cause I am too but I'm mostly angry because he didn't care much about recruiting Hs kids and left the cupboard completely bare with front court bits after this year and also left JP with little time to hire a new coach or maybe more importantly Fred leaving now in June doesn't give JP slot of options with other coaches at this stage.

The new coach is already in town. It was pretty obvious that Otz was going to be the new coach, whether it was as soon as this season or as a coach-in-waiting for a couple years.

Best part of all is this is coming from a known Hawk fan.

Our usually Hawk fans have been pretty decent through this. However pretty sure some of the flood of new peeps are Hawk trolls. And my degenerate tavern Hawk acquaintances in real life have been intolerable.

Maybe we should be proactive and change the website to www.firenextcoach.com

Bulls fans already have that one. Haven't seen much enthusiasm for GarPax's obsession.

And I know many have their doubts about TJ but he is ready for this shot, he already possesses 2/3rds of what he needs for this job ... the ability to recruit and he just has to be smart enough to surround himself with good people.

TJ coming back from Washington after one year in retrospect has to be a sign that this potentiality was going to happen.

No one will out work TJ, he's ready for this shot and people saying he isn't diminishes his contributions to the success realized so far!

The biggest issue/concern will be finding a guy who can recruit as good as he does!

Much kinder than my thoughts.

Why assume this is going to be the case, OP?

I mean, I'd expect the program to dip for a year or two after this season, just because the cupboard looks pretty bare once this senior class is gone (and worse if Monte goes pro) and Otz is unlikely to find anyone in the current recruiting class to fill the gaps in 2016-17. I'd expect something similar to Hoiberg's first year, while Otz gets some high school recruits and maybe has a couple transfers waiting in the wings for a year.

For the same reasons, I'd expect something more like Hoiberg's 2nd year, since I think the next coach can put an immediate stamp on the program.

I don't think its as much about TJ as a coach as it is about having so many scholarships to fill. In 2 years, this roster will be nearly unrecognizable. That would be a tall order for any coach. A interesting question is just how much did Fred turn things around. If we are where we act like we are, it shouldn't be a huge deal to keep the momentum going and at least be at tourney contender every year. If we aren't, I think that means Fred didn't really get us over the hump. Seems like any long term praise for Fred is a tad premature, we won't know for a few years the impact this 2 month limbo has really had.

so we can point back to this thread and many others in 5 years like we did with the Hoiberg hired thread this spring and poke fun of all the nay sayers, right?

Greg Heiar - Wichita State - TJ was an assistant for him at Chipola

Fred first year was the worst team we've put on the floor in my lifetime, if Monte leaves after this season it could be pretty close in 16/17. Cooke, Burton, Thomas, , Babb, NN? Not one proven guy in that group, pretty comparable to Garrett, Scotty, JVB and Jake Anderson in that regard but this current group will have a bit more experience than Fred's first year.

So next year will be fun. The cupboards are full and any coach will have success coming into the 2015-2016 season. But how many more years after that, will the program be back like it was during Mc-doormat years? I would say 2 to 3 seasons.

Pollard made a big miss with Mc-Doormat, hit a grand slam with Fred, so it is time for another miss with his next coach.

If they asked you to coach them...I'm guessing THIS year...buck up Buttercup! If the hire is right...then maybe never. :)

everything is depending on this year.. we could VERY easily fall apart after this year. before if this team blew it in the first round, or god forbid didn't even make the tourney we could probably still get some good recruits because kids wanted to come play for Fred Hoiberg, the NBA offense and all that good stuff. if that happens this year I see all of the momentum this program has built dying. I see the the Future of Iowa state basketball resting on the shoulders of next years team. have a great year and the next coach has a legit shot at some good recruits, if they fail recruiting will be a lot harder and we could be heading back to being an after thought in the big 12. no pressure though ha.
