It seems to be a popular subject during football bowl season as most bowl games are a giant cash cow. I have never really read any info on how the tournament pays out the schools invited. Does anyone know? Is it per round? Does it depend on location?

I think conferences are paid by appearances and then each decides how to divide up the money.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the B12 conference as a whole gets so much money depending on how many games of each tournament their teams are involved in...then the conference splits up this money evenly.

So, if this is right, we'll get the same amount of $ as last year.

As for bowl season, unless you go to a BCS bowl, a lot of programs actually end up losing money on going to bowl games.

I found this article on the deal between the NCAA and CBS/Turner for TV rights:

http://articles.latimes.com/2010/apr/23/business/la-fi-ct-turner-20100423

Assuming these are accurate numbers and this isn't including ticket sales, merchandise, etc. the NCAA makes a **** load of money off of March Madness, right?

I didn't read the article, but without the NCAA tournament, the NCAA as we know it today would not exist because it would have no money.

Some argue that all the Div 1 schools should get together and create their own "NCAA" tournament because the money will go directly into the pockets of the schools instead of being filtered through an institution like the NCAA that doesn't seem to be working very well in today's day in age.

And similar argument for the bowl system. If the colleges themselves set up their own playoff + bowl system, whatever that looked like, instead of outsourcing their product for sleezy bowl execs and cities to get fat off of, the schools would have a lot more money.

Think Big 10 network. The Big 10 got tired of outsourcing their product to ESPN so they created their own network and now get a ton more money.
