Fines for rich people are like get out of jail free cards. $1M is absolutely nothing to someone like Huggins who has accumulated enormous wealth over his life.

How long is suspension? Should probably match the fine so 25% of games?
I don’t buy this at all.

A quarter of someone’s salary is a huge hit no matter how much they make. It’s still a quarter of their salary. At a certain point, people adjust to their means, and any huge deviation will impact their daily lives in a similar fashion.

I mean…this is widely accepted economic theory.

Correct. Most wealthy people have a plan for their money. This is significant. Plus the suspension, plus the training, plus getting nationally blasted. It’s a pretty hefty penalty. He will be used as an example for years to come.

His contract is now year-to-year also, as opposed to multi-year. His contract will need to be reviewed annually now, meaning no “buyout” if he were to be fired, which they now can do any time.

I think West Virginia is taking heavy and appropriate action. To say this “is absolutely nothing” to Huggins is to be, well, inaccurate.

I don't think dollar amount really means anything, he likely has many millions of dollars in savings and investments by this point in his career/life. I'm sure Bob could retire right now if he wanted to.

Using the money to further awareness of LGBTQ+ issues and mental health as a whole is a good move though, I like that. So is the required donation to Xavier, depending on the amount that maybe means more than losing a million from a 4+ million dollar salary.

The suspension is whatever, those games don't matter and they almost certainly roll through them anyways.

A donation to Xavier is part of the deal?

If he didn't have the #1 transfer class in the country coming in, he would have just retired...

Then when he goes to a sweet 16 in 2024, he will get a multi year extension and raise to go back to status quo

he can always negotiate a $1 million dollar raise in the near future. his contract was changed from year to year. he could use that to change jobs without having a buyout as well.

I disagree. $1M is a big deal. Keep in mind that most NBA fines on players who make a hell of a lot more than Huggins are in the $25,000 to $50,000 range.

That’s one hell of a precedent WV just set. I agree that is a massive fine. Hopefully others will realize that word is not acceptable and will learn from his mistakes.

It’s a big deal with respect to other fines, sure. It’s not a big deal with respect to how it influences or punishes Huggins who has already earned 10s of millions. $1M will not change his life one bit. He can go on like nothing happened.

But if a person is making $100K and you fine them $25K, now that will be a significant punishment.

Anyone who doesn’t think taking 1/4 of someone’s salary is impactful is out of their mind.
25% from someone making 50k is a lot more impactful than from someone that has been making millions for a decade or more. He’s going to make 3 million dollars this year. Maybe he’ll have to sell some stocks that he otherwise wouldn’t have, but he’s not going to have to worry about rent or food.

I look forward to when West Virginia comes to town and the students sneak in a bunch of dildos.

How will that $1M change Huggins’ life? It won’t. He will not notice it. He already has 10s of millions in the bank.
What do you propose then? I mean it’s not just the money, his reputation is on display for everyone to pick at and set as an example for, he’s suspended, and he also is going to sensitivity training. How much blood is enough for a thoughtless comment?
