I work in Glenwood, a lot of rumors going around. Sounds like it was a pretty bad situation, supposedly the kid that was shot was shot while running away after the first shot missed. Idk all the laws around when/how/where you can shoot someone but this sounds like they won't get it sorted out for a while. The kids involved were walking around town yesterday, so none of them has been charged. Its a bad situation but the town ahs really come together in support of Hutch.

Never allowed to shoot someone in the back. In Iowa at least

If these kids were really ganging up and beating up a defenseless principal, and I'm on the jury.. Well lets just say its open season on some knee caps.

This is pretty tough in Glenwood - I don't think Glenwood is trashy honestly. Scenery is amazing around there and their brewery is awesome... but like many smaller towns it has some issues. Glenwood seems to be evolving into a quasi Omaha suburb - for those that don't want to live in CB.

Per a friend in Glenwood - Principal Hutch is supposedly quite beloved - even by the most troubled kids there, so the whole community is in shock and I think its homecoming week so even more concerning.

Per release - there were 3 former male students, and 3 MINOR females - Hutch and his wife were assaulted, but Hutch sounds like he was/is in bad shape. Thus Hurl Beechum warned and shot one of the guys in the leg. Seems like total self defense and I'm sure that he is quite torn about this, but I would have done the same.

Other details (specifically events leading up to this & what was said there) are being held tight as I think this is being investigated by multiple angles. I REALLY hope its not a hate crime - but if it is I hope they throw the book at these toolbags. Seeing pictures of Hutch with kids and such - We need leaders like him in communities like Glenwood.

I can assure - there are a ton of prayers and tears over this, and the support for Hutch in Glenwood will only escalate over the week.

John Reese approves.

One of the kids involved (Im sure not the wisest legal move) did an interview, he said racial slurs were used. I don't think the assault was racially motiviated to being with but after words/blows were exchanged, it got ugly. A few of the students attend the alternative school in Gwood, the kid who was interviewed claimed he didn't know that the man involved was the principal.

As larger media outlets hve picked this story up, race is becoming the bigger issue. The first 2 days, no one mentioned the principal was AA, it's the headline in some Omaha media outlets.

I think he was technically shot in the foot but as he was fleeing. As bad as this was, these kids are lucky the didn't either kill the principal (by most accounts he was knocked unconscious with the first punch and then viciously beaten while unconscious) or been killed themselves.

Glenwood is a pretty safe community, definitely not the nicest town in the state but compared to many other similar sized towns in Western/Southwest Iowa, it's not bad at all.

I attended Urbandale High School while Hutch was the principal there. He was very respected throughout that school district and he related to students better than just about any principal/teacher that I have ever seen. Very sad to see this happen to such a nice guy.

Hopefully for Hurl's sake the shot hit the kid on the front of his body and not the back. Hard to believe an incident like this isn't racially motivated. And teenagers are dumb.

Only sad thing is by shooting them in the leg, the Hutchs may get sued for his hospital bills. It's harder for dead people to sue. I hope the Hutch family recovers quickly.

There are a lot of bits and pieces and it will be an obvious legal battle.

What McDaniel's lawyer is saying happened does not seem reasonable or believable in my opinion.

The position of McDaniel's back relative to Beechum at the time of the discharge is a point of argument for McDaniel's attorney and possibly the county attorney. The injuries sustained by Hutchinson and Beechum apparently happened first and are a greater point of argument in my opinion in the justification of use of deadly force.

Good ****in' grief. Lawyer had already coached his client to say he was "helping" the principal when he was shot. Yeah, right.

Those kids are just lucky that the cops didn't show up first. They don't aim for the legs or face personal lawsuits. Half :pfrown:
