Hey guys, I'm making my first (and my last, at least for football) trip to Ames this weekend and I was looking for advice on things to see and do in Ames and Des Moines which is where I'll be staying Friday night. I don't know any ISU fans in person, but I had a few sit next to me at our game in Lincoln in 2005 and they were great to be around, I'm hoping for a similar experience this weekend. Good luck to you guys on Saturday, here's hoping for a good game. GBR

It depends on what you're looking to do. If you're a partying type of guy, go to the Court Ave. area, thats where a lot of bars are at.
On Saturday, tailgate all day.

Hey welcome to CF. If your staying in Des Moines anything downtown is normally a good time, try court avenue, lots of bars and really good places to eat, except its on the expensive time. If you want to be like most out of towners go to Jordan Creek Mall, nothing really special just a big mall with a ton of restaurants around it. Tailgating is the best place to be saturday, there alot of lots to tailgate in, people normally get there 5 hours give or take before kick off. I recommend the generic Hickory Park itll be packed though, i personally like Battles BBQ better though, or Old Main Brewing is really good too. anyways hope you have a good time in Ames and at Jack Trice Stadium, hopefully itll be a good close game. Best of luck

How old are you. If your young and staying in Des Moines Court Ave. down town may be one of the better places to go.

One place to go downtown in Des Moines would be the High Life. They were on Man vs Food and serve bacon wrapped tater tots. I've never had them, but they looked great on TV. Shag carpet on the floors, a sit down table top pac man game, its straight out of the 70s

Hickory Park is pretty good, but you might have a long wait.

Hickory Park is way over rated, not bad food but not great, and not to mention its too damn loud in there to carry on a conversation.

We're supposed to welcome the fans that wanted to watch the B12 burn and ISU with it?

I honestly don't think their fans had anything to do with the decision.

But hey, stay angry. Soon you will die of heart failure, and I can eat your supper.

You'll be fine in the bars. Just remember all the beer that gets spilled on you was just an accident.

You might run into a Hawkeye or two at Blazing Saddles at well. I heard they were trying to take it over.

They shouldn't be a problem. Most of the guys there will back down if you take off your shirt and flex.

If you're looking for a FANTASTIC meal, gotta go to The Cafe in the north part of Ames (area called Somerset... all the buildings are brick, can't miss it)

The food here is some of the best I've had, and reasonably priced... especially considering the quality. Definitely not the type of food you find anywhere that you can afford. Last weekend I had an awesome 10 oz strip, my girlfriend had the salmon. Their Sunday brunch is also amazing, but be prepared to wait a long time. It's a small place and definitely popular.
