I-35 @ MM 99

I know there are a few people on here who make the commute from the metro to Ames each day...

On I35 at about mile marker 99, there has been this horrid smell for about the past 2 months. At first I figured it was something Ag related, but after all the snow melt and a few good rains, it is still there. Has anyone else smelled this and/or know what the hell it is?

Is it just a few mile south of Hwy 30?

I don't make that same commute, but I've noticed the smell.

No it is between the Elkhart and Huxley exits, right about where NE 142nd crosses over the interstate.

If this is a few miles south of 30 then its all of you and other residents of Ames' crap at the waste water plant. If its further than that I'm not sure

I know the area but have never smelled it. It's really flat there so it must be ag related.

The smell you are talking about between the Elkhart exit and the Huxley exit has a musty smell. I just attributed it to the over saturated grounds there from all the melting snow and the rains.

The smell was there before the snow started melting, and the grounds were pretty dry prior to the rain we got Friday...

It doesn't really smell like hogs. Its hard to explain the smell as I cant attribute it to anything. Am I really one of the few who have smelled this, because I have noticed it just about every day for the past 2 months.

It smells like a chemical. I noticed it a while back too. I figured it was a fertilizer app but I'm not farmer. No idea. But you aren't crazy, I noticed it too. (It's well south of the poo plant so it isn't that)

It's not Ag related as nothing would be applied with snow on the ground and it wouldn't last much longer then a couple hours after it was applied.

I have noticed it for a few months as well. It smells like a rotting deer or animal. I keep thinking that every time I pass and wonder why it hasn't been cleaned up. I, too, have wondered what the smell is. Weird.

OK, if it's a chemical smell like mentioned above then I say it's not ag related. If it smells like rotting animal, it could be that a farm nearby is getting chicken/turkey manure to fertilize their ground and typically when this happens, the facility hauls out the manure and stockpiles it in the field waiting for ground conditions to be right to apply it. When it is piled up and can start to heat up from the inside and start to decay like a rotting animal would smell like that.

Hog sites can smell bad as well in the right conditions and that would have a rotten sulfur type smell too it. I looked over the map and couldn't find any of those though.

I commute to Ames and I can honestly say I haven't noticed anything at that location.

Now the PooPond in Ankeny is a different matter entirely. I hope whoever decided to put that thing right next to a major thoroughfare is in another line of work.

I noticed it too. I just figured it was from the town of Huxley

I have noticed too. More like an ammonia smell, but not directly animal related. I personally thought it might be an anhydrous ammonia leak. Maybe somebody spread dry manure (straw / manure) from a nearby barn. Not really sure.

I have noticed this smell as well, it is not anhydrous ammonia or any other fertilizer...it has been smelly for months

The smell is that of human sewage, and i've smelled it there for quite a while. My guess is that a farmer is getting solids from somewhere and spreading it as fertilizer. Don't know if it would be from a waste treatment plant or from someone who pumps out septic tanks. Anyone who has ever spent any time around a sewer lagoon would recognize that smell immediately...

Edit... It also smells a lot like Iowa City...
