Thanks for stopping by.

Niang is a huge loss, but not for the reasons you may expect. Though he is our tallest starter, he is not known for his defense or rebounding. He is a guy that can create his own shot and has great vision. He is often used as a point forward, so the offense often goes through him.

Monte Morris shares the PG duties with Deandre Kane. Though he is a true freshman, he leads the nation in assist/turnover ratio at around 5/1.

Deandre Kane is a match up problem for many teams because he is a big guard at 6'4 200 lbs. He is a stat-stuffer averaging 16.9 PPG, 6.7 RPG, and 5.8 APG. He also shoots the 3 at 40%

Naz Long is likely the guy who will replace Niang in the starting lineup. He is our best outside threat shooting the 3 just over 40%

Dustin Hogue plays the 4 for us. Though he is only 6'6, he averages 8.5 RPG. He also scored 10.9 PPG and is our best defender.

Melvin Ejim is the Big 12 player of the year. At 6'6, he averages 18.1 PPG and 8.5 RPG.

One guy that doesn't play a lot (though has been seeing the court more recently) is Daniel Edozie. He is 6'9 and is a good rebounder and defender. He isn't an offensive threat, so that's why he doesn't play too often.

I think your backcourt not turning the ball over will be an important factor in this game, and therefore Monte Morris could be a key for you guys. McAdoo is an important barometer for our team; when he plays well, we win, so it is unfortunate your best defender plays at the four. We actually have one of our best perimeter defensive teams I have seen in a while, so Kane will definitely have to bring his "A" game, but he definitely is a load to handle. Ejim is my biggest concern on your team.

Do you have a good perimeter defender to guard Paige? He doesn't look like much, but he is a fantastic second half player if teams do not focus on stopping him.

Several reasons: #1 we have a very deep bench which we employ even in the NCAA tournament; thus much like Louisville, we tend to wear down opponents by the end of the game because we don't let up on either defense or offense. #2: we have one of (if not the best) strength and conditioning coaches in the country in Jonas Sarahtian, which compliments our bench depth. #3 While other teams have equivalent or better primary breaks, UNC consistently has the best secondary break in the country. Not to get too technical, but essentially our bigs are extremely fast each year, and they know where to be on the floor in the secondary break to get easy buckets (as well as where the guards will be should it be better to pass to an open shooter), so a team's defensive work is not done if they simple stop our primary break.

So, which ACC team would you think resembles us the most? In particular, which ones played up-tempo against you?

We have seen plenty of Paige in the state of Iowa. I am guessing we start with Morris on him and maybe switch to Kane in the second half. We wound up using Hogue on Ingram from NCCU but their bigs were not the same offensive threat and Hogue's size and ability shut him down. Hogue is our best defenser, guessing he will be on McAdoo.

Morris is actually a pretty darn good defender too. I dont know if he will get the Paige assignment tho.

Hmmm - I'm not really sure anyone in the ACC is similar to Iowa State, as the ACC teams tried to play slow and usually had one big low post player rather than 5 guys who could spread the floor. Duke is probably the best ACC example; we split with them despite their superior talent. UAB had 5 guys who could spread the floor at the beginning of the year, and they used that strategy with devastating results, so a similar team to ISU has hurt us before.

Teams I recall that played up-tempo against us this year were Michigan State, Louisville, NC State, Kentucky, and Texas. Texas succeeded in using this strategy, while the pace helped us beat Michigan State and Louisville; it was a bit of a non-factor against N.C. State and Kentucky.

I think it will end up being Morris. Kane and Long probably aren't quick enough to stay completely with him.

Geez, let it go. We don't need to act like a bunch of d'bags. He said he came in peace, thanks to those CF'ers who responded decently to him, and now, let him go in peace. Let our Cyclones on the court to our talking.

Okay, time to join my UNC friends. I enjoyed the discussion and your insight, guys, and I look forward to an exciting game.

FYI, his next post is in response to an actual BB discussion post from me.

"Go in pieces" is an old joke . . . like some say under their breath when the priest says "go in peace."

I can see Fred using Kane like he used Niang some. Give Morris the point and let Kane do some dirty work. I also doubt Kane and Ejim and maybe Houge leave the floor much today.

So, the stats about how well UNC does against up-tempo teams are largely derived from games with teams that didn't play up-tempo. I thought so. We will see how much Paige's teammates really want to run with us. If UNC tries to play up-tempo with us, I think they will diminish their vaunted rebounding ability.

....you go in pieces.

You seem decent. If your guys slow down Kane's penetration, that's trouble for us today. You'll see him penetrate and distribute a lot today, and you're going to see about 85 Cyclone points. That's just what we do.

North Carolina must, and will, be destroyed.

Exactly 85 points. Boom! Great call.
