If Duke can do it, why not ISU

I am not sure I'd like to play in the old Big 12 either.
Some years, OSU, BU and aTm
Other years, UT, OU, and Tech with Nebby (easier than it used to be), KU (Win), Colorado (Win), MIzzou (**** those guys, likely loss), KSU.

The schedule would be eaiser in the fact that we would get 4 non-con games however so we would likely get to 7 wins instead of 6 multiple times.

We can and I think we will. Duke won't turn into a perenial power nor will ISU (or KSU or even Baylor but they have more potential) but both have the capicity for periods of elevated success.

The success of ISU getting into a BCS game is by getting back to 12 and winning the division. Kind of like winning the division by having a good team in a year where your schedule rotates and you don't play Texas and OU. Then you get a chance at OU in the Title game. Round Robin (as much as everyone likes it) is not good for ISU "football", but in the end I really don't think we need to be worried about winning the division/league. I think we need to have a decade of 6-8 wins is the norm before that.

They better enjoy it this year because with the recruiting classes Miami has assembled last year and this year they are going to be the team to beat in the Coastal Division for foreseeable future.

Sure the conference and competition factor into this, but Duke's success says one thing to me: Do not be satisfied with 6/7 win seasons. I am 100% in Rhoads' corner but I expect a breakout season in the next 2 years or it's time to move on (assuming we can afford to). If KSU can play in a BCS bowl, then so can ISU.

"I'm thankful the game is Saturday night because I intend to let them sleep in Saturday morning because I know in my heart that they will be up all night this week doing papers and studying for finals," Cutcliffe said.

Quote from the Duke coach. Seriously?

Even football players at Duke don't load up academically during football season, do they? Isn't that what Spring and Summer terms are for?

Sounded like he was joking around a bit.

Duke... Baylor... K-State even... It can be done. QBs and COACHING... Even ISU was on the verge with Sage and then Seneca. Too bad OU figured us out and gave everyone a gameplan to beat us after that (we lacked on the coaching side a bit, still love ya DannyMac)

I really think the O-line gets overlooked in a lot of these types of conversations. We had a superior QB to just about anyone playing the game at that time in Seneca, but once they figured out he was the team, the rest of the season was a wash.

I think you build a solid offensive line and it makes everyone on the team look a lot better. All of a sudden your QB starts making better decisions, receivers have time to get open and your running backs all of a sudden start running for more yards per game. I'm not saying that this was Duke's solution. I haven't seen any of their games this year. But I still believe at ISU this has been our major problem since Rhoads took over. Everything stats on the line of scrimmage. Control that and you actually have to have a bad QB to lose games.

We can...especially if we move to the ACC and have a year we don't face Florida St and Clemson in the regular season.

Dude...do a little research before you throw out a thread title like that.

This. A million times, this. We HAVE been in Duke's position and then p*ssed away a spot in the B12 CG. TWICE!

Correct. We had our window and missed it unfortunately. We'll never be in a division as bad as the Big 12 north was during the mid 2000's again.

I'm not a fan of saying "never", but this reflection back is a good reminder that CPR's has never been given as easy a path to a "successful" season as what McCarney had in the mid-2000's. That is not a knock on McCarney, just a good reminder when people want to try and make McCarney vs CPR comparisons.

One interesting note on Duke's success this year is that the breakthrough year came in year six of David Cutcliffe. His in-conference record was a somewhat CPR-like 1-7, 3-5, 1-7, 1-7, 3-5 in his first five years. Sometimes rebuilding takes longer than we like. Duke had to work through defensive issues like ISU has had offensive issues.

Also, before we too quickly compare Duke 2013 to ISU 2004 and 2005, remember Duke is 10-2 and ISU was 6-5 and 7-4. And before we too quickly dismiss the ACC, Duke defeated both Virginia Tech and Miami. Duke's Cutcliffe was (and still is) the personal quarterback tutor for both Peyton and Eli Manning, so the guy can obviously coach.

What Duke has done is ultimately very similar to what Baylor and K-State have done. No reason ISU can't think about doing something similar.

So I am clear, you expect ISU to be in a BCS bowl game in 2 years??

Agree. Duke does not have to be the example. KSU was within a game of playing for the NC last year. There is no more better example than in our own conference that a school with limited resources and not an attractive recruiting destination can accomplish.
