If we are going to continue to see the read option

I would like to see some passes off it.

ISU tried one and if Rohach hit the WR it was wide open, and I think everyone by now has seen the Auburn TD on a read option that involved a pass. While we are add it lets bring a guy in motion on a reverse and make teams think about that as well once in a while.

Reverse? Please see the OT from yesterday's game that play almost sealed the deal for us....

I saw most of the 2nd half and only the 3rd OT, what happened? I am referring to off a read option also, was that where it came from?

I agree. If Rohach doesn't overthrow Bundrage on that play, he scores on a long TD.

These are exactly the kinds of plays we should have been running all year long. When we run that read option during the year, we NEVER throw out of it. Defenses just crashed in on the RB every time and then made our QB take a beating.

That play you're talking about though, I see Baylor run all the time. OSU does to I believe? It at least keeps the defense honest on that read option. Rohach faked the handoff on the read option, started to run to the outside, and then when WV's corner came off of Bundrage to tackle Rohach, he flings it to a wide open Bundrage. But he overthrew it unfortunately. But that will keep that corner from doing that next time, and then Rohach can keep it and get some decent yardage.

Same on the OT TD pass to Coleman. We've never ran a sweep option with the QB and RB and then had our QB drop back out of it and throw it. Coleman was wide open. These defenses are just overpursuing us big time each and every week, but Mess never keeps them honest like this.

It was good to see on occasion last night. Need to see it more often IMO.

I agree. I think we also ran an option pass last night at some point that worked very well, where Rohach rolled out to his right with a RB flanking him that he could have pitched to, but instead threw it down field for a big gain. Might have even been in that last OT.

We absolutely have to give defenses different looks if we're going to run a read-option formation. None of our QB's are athletic enough for defenses to respect unless they have to think about other possibilities of where the ball might go.

I think some of our screen passes were run-pass options. IMO, using the pistol formation actually hurts our ability to throw out of the read option. It makes the angle harder to throw from.

Every time I see read option I'm thinking about nebraska running the read option on the field and in the classroom.

I agree that our play calling hasn't kept defenses honest.

When our receivers have had trouble getting separation, it hasn't seemed like we have called plays that allow our receivers to brush off their defender. Having your slot receiver run a sharp 10 & out while your split receiver runs a post is likely to leave one of the receivers open if they practice their timing and spacing.

Also, I don't recall any of our QB's executing a well timed pump fake on a double move of any kind.

Baylor gets away with illegal blocks many times on passes off the read option fake. They usually go 3-4 yards downfield to take out the MLB and 2nd level guys which opens up the middle of the field for crossing routes and cut backs - basically full out run blocking. There are enough teams complaining about the tactic that Baylor will probably lose their unfair advantage.

Can we at least be honest with ourselves and admit that without actually reviewing game film, we have only a high-level view of what the offense is/isn't trying to do? I understand you probably have a DVR and maybe even record the games. But without really going over the "film" (broadcast TV isn't that great of a way to do this because a lot of action happens off the screen) it's difficult to know what all is happening during a play. There's a reason coaches make GA's watch hours and hours of film to scout opponents every week - you can't tell that much from watching a game as it happens, especially when you're emotionally invested.

Anyway, Messingham is out and now we'll get a chance to see what a (presumably) better OC can do with what appears to be a fair amount of talent.

I agree. I like the read option, but I want it as just a part of a mix of formations/plays, I'd like to see the QB running less out of it, and I'd like to see more passing out of it.
