Zabriskie being an All-American at HWT might be enough to bring this team into a team trophy

A few of many potential candidates, removing Fizer & Tinsley, with an eye toward “missing elements” for this year’s team:
Chris Babb — lock-down defender who also can shoot (not the most obvious choice, but would help in context of this unit and also fits chemistry of Hoiberg system)
Barry Stevens — an outside shooter like that, in this offense? Wow.
Jeff Hornacek — I’d even take 10 minutes of Horny per game to give Morris rest, with zero drop-off.
Victor Alexander — smooth, productive presence in the paint
Fred Hoiberg, Dedric Willoughby — cannot go wrong
Jeff Grayer — No need to explain

I've always thought a really killer 2-guard would patch a "relative" weakness in the lineup and rotation. Granted, it's not like we have chopped liver at the position; the Sean Haluska days are over. But when you compare it to where we are the strongest...

Point Guard.) Monte Morris, set enough there where Tinsley might not have a comparative advantage as an option at that position
"Energy Guy".) Dustin hits 45% of his threes and plays with a lot of fire and motor, more than most, not a huge comparative upgrade in replacement
Stretch 4/Power Forward/Scoring Forward.) Doesn't get much better than Niang here, a little unconventional, but he's great for a reason
Center.) McKay probably is not as good as Cato, but he is a better fit for the offense with the running and offers enough not slow us down in the half-court

We've rotated through Naz Long (the best of the three), BDJ (situational-wise good), and Matt Thomas here (really streaky... won us 1-2 games, though). You really need two here, though. Another awesome guard or 3&D guy that fits into Fred's offense or creates mismatches would be tremendous. Hence, I'd go for our best three point shooters ever...

(p. 22)

Scott Christopherson (yes, the best Cyclone of all time from three-land, 44.3%)
Tyrus McGee (43.7%)
Jake Sullivan (42.4%)
Fred Hoiberg (40.0%)
Dedric Willoughby (39.0%)

...are the obvious ones that stand out to me. Fred and Dedric were probably the most balanced of those players, though, if you weren't just looking for second killer shooter.

Kane makes a ton of sense, too. We miss him inside-outside game and ability to create. He was a big enough body to be a nuisance enough on defense and rebounded like crazy. The Morris/Kane back court worked just fine together, too, with both them out there.

Morris
Kane
Hogue
Niang
McKay (more or less the same as last year, really, if McKay replaces Melvin)
-
put Naz back in the 6th man slot (save that everybody is a year better)
Nader to backup the posts
BDJ/Thomas as needed

= scarier than even what we have now, which is pretty scary
Watching DeAndre and Monte fight to be the alpha male guard would be fun

Fizer. Because he was freaking unstoppable.

Tyrus McGee - imagine this team with a solid, 45%, knock-down Trey sniper.

In conference play...

Niang = 45.3% from three
Hogue = 44.%
Morris = 43.9%
Long = 40.5%

A small-ball lineup of Morris, Long, Fred/Dedric, Hogue, and Niang...

(or next year with Morris, Cooke, Long, Williams, and Niang...)

Where's the Kermit GIF?

I'm going to go ahead and vote a 2nd time for the guy who was arguably the best player on the floor in the ncaa tournament while playing against the likes of andre Drummond, kidd Gilchrist, jeremy lamb, unibrow, and jones.

That's right folks, Royce Land of Lions White... again.

I'm starting to lean this way. Only problem would be when he and McKay are on the floor together it limits the outside shooting, but that's some incredible talent that you can't ignore.

Re: If you could go back in time and add a past Cyclone player to this year's team...

I am taking out Fizer and Tinsley b/c they would be an obvious choice, but I am talking about players other than those 2 players.....Mainly b/c they would replace Monte and potentially Niang, and I think we would want to keep those guys.

Would you add Fred? How about Kato? Kato and McKay in our front line? Kenny Pratt? Dedric Willoughby? Scott Bankhead?

Don't forget about the founding fathers of Hilton Magic. Stevens, Grayer, Hornecek, Tompkins...

You can even go way back in time and bring back The Roland Rocket, or even Waldo Wegner.

Who would you add and why? Which would help us the most?

No question about it. Don Smith a/k/a Abdul Aziz... mid-60s.

Unbelievable talent.

My post was truly in jest, my real vote would be Royce. No contest. This is how he do in the tourney:

odunk.gif

He would also have been one of about 3 other players in CBB that could legitimately claim to have the talent to play on UK's team.

Aww. The vid cuts out right before he says "I'm the best player on this court!"

I would take Royce on this team of course.

Fizer would also be an asset giving us a dominant post player to compliment our shooters. Georges has good post moved but he doesn't overpower anyone like Royce or Fizer would.

Re: If you could go back in time and add a past Cyclone player to this year's team...

A week or two ago on the anniversary of Larry Bird scoring 60 against the Hawks I watch the highlights of the game. Maybe it's just me, but doesn't anyone feel like the competition level, even at the professional level, was nowhere near what it is now? It just seems like the great players in the past would only be good players if they played against competition today.

I see where you're coming from, but you also have to take into the account the advancements in medicine, training, diet, travel/accomodations, scouting etc. There is no guarantee that the greats of the past would be as great today, but if you adjust for time and level the playing field, I wouldn't rule out the possibility.

Grayer. Now end thread. In today's game of either threes or lay ups Grayer would go off with his mid range game.

Absolutely. I love all our players, but Jeff would immediately be our leading scorer. Imagine BDJ, but on 100% of the time.
