if you could have a ten minute talk with Mcdermott...

I love this idea!!!
Mac said DG added 15 lbs of muscle this past offseason, but he sure still looks skinny as a rail. maybe his frame won't allow the growth i expect to see out of a d1 athlete that is three years into the program.

I would have said 20 when I have seen him in person

This right here.
Get outta town. Do it now. You are not good. Any of these would work, and should get the message across to Greg. I cannot believe some people think we should give him more time. For what?

I am not gonna sit here and say that Gmac is the greatest coach but I will defend him to a point. I don't get to watch all the games nor do I get to follow the bball program as close as I want to but it seems that every game that I have been able to watch, this team turns the ball over horribly. Along with that and not playing a full 40 minutes is what is killing this team. As much as everyone want to blame Gmac, I honestly don't think that he should be blamed for this.

A few questions that come to my mind.

1.) What do you discuss with the players at halftime? And why does it seem like the first five minutes or so of the 2nd half kills them every game.

2.) What is the strategy on offense? I really can't figure it out. It seems like the starting PG just dribbles around for awhile and then finds one of his forwards, who force an 18-20 foot jumper. A big part of the offense results when Gilstrap, or sometimes Dendy or Hamilton follow up the miss.

3.) What is the procedure for the fast break? It seems that whomever gets the rebound just takes off down court with it. Gilstrap seems to be the main culprit with this. He would be so much more dangerous on one of the wings on the fast break than bringing it up the court. He has decent handles, but I believe he really needs to find a PG when he sees a fast break opportunity. And I can't believe the season has gone on for 20+ games and that still has not been corrected. I would be willing to bet that we've converted on less than 25% of our fast breaks when Gilstrap, or anybody other than a point guard has led the fast break...

4.) What is your prognosis for next season. If, in fact, Gilstrap and Brackins are gone after the season. How do you replace two NBA foward type draft picks with only one recruit signed over 6'5?

And last, I would tell him that I'm concerned about the direction of the program. I've been a season ticket holder for a long time, and I just can't see a reason to believe that next season will be any better than this. The last time I had this little hope was after Morgan's last season. The future looked bleak, whether or not he stayed. I'd just like to have any reason for optimism when it comes to Cyclone basketball...

Larry got so much crap for that during his first season to. I remember being in the stands when we would struggle "hey coach why don't you spend some time on the court instead of the weight room". 15-15, then 32-5. Tinsley benched like 175 when he came and left benching over 300 if I remember right. LE almost ran him outta practice the first day.

Yes I remember Tinsley saying " hey coach I didn't come here for the track team"

I'd say something like this and change detail where they apply:

YouTube - Bobby Knight - angry motivation speech -

Yes this is it. I would have this exact talk with him. Possibly throw in that it is time to stop embarrasing himself and the entire cyclone nation. Convince Greg that he is basically just stealing the universities money at this point and it would be best for all parties if he just resigned and walked away.

1)Practice fundamentals until there is no thought process, just action and reaction.

2)Extreme strength and conditioning, no execptions for anybody. CB needs more muscle and some serious coaching on low-post moves, (see Steve Krafcisn, sp?).

3)If you don't rebound, you don't play, no exceptions.

4)Coach better spacing and off the ball movement when CB's double teamed. It's too easy to defense us with minimum effort.

5)Communicate better with young players, learn to speak their language, so to speak.

6)Stay true to yourself and your values, they are underated in today's win-at-all-costs mentality.

7)Don't worry about your future, if you don't win here, you'll win somewhere else.

8)Winning is contagious, unfortunately so is losing.

9)Kick some serious butt in the Big 12 tourney.

Well.....let me preface this by saying that I am not happy with how this season is turning out. I feel like I'm being ripped off by buying ESPN's Full Court package for the full season. I feel my own level of interest waning.

But....this whole thread reminds me of something I read in a book about college basketball once. A coach by the name of Terry Holland, who used to coach at Virginia if I remember correctly, was at a dinner party once when someone came up to him and said, "Coach, may I give you some advice about your team?" Holland replied, "Yes, I would mind as a matter of fact." When the guy looked surprised at his response, Holland said something to the effect of "What do you for a living? Oh, you're a doctor? Well, you went to school for that, right? Well, guess what? I've worked just as hard to be a basketball coach as you have to be a doctor, and I wouldn't come up to you during surgery and tell you how to do it better...."

The point is, while I am not endorsing McD coaching performance or his continued leadership, I would have to imagine that he and his staff know more about coaching than all of the posters on CycloneFanatic.com put together, and no, coaching your daughter's 5th grade gym league team doesn't count.

Therefore, McD shouldn't feel he has to give us 5 minutes of his time for us to give him advice, much less 10. It always makes me shake my head when I read some irate poster go off after a loss, "I could coach this team better than he could!". No, shut the **** up, you couldn't.

I understand that this is just a hypothetical question and all, but still, the sheer arrogance of some (not all) on this board just blows my mind.

The guy has had some SERIOUS bad luck. Seriously, we lost some players he had NO control over, and he has injury after injury. If we had Wes still, nobody would be giving him hell because we'd be right up there with KU.

Give the guy a break and another couple years. He's got a plan.

During my ten minutes with McDermott, there would be no words. I would just facepalm the entire time.

This is completely and utterly false. You can excuse one season, and maybe two, to bad luck. But when we've had "bad luck" for four years now with no sign of improvement, it's not called "luck", it's called "poor coaching".

I would ask him why we have only scored one time off an in bounds pass all year. Why do we always choose to lob it all the way away from the basket to Brackins where he is in no position to score.

I would have other things to say that I won't post.

This. I would tell him that luck, whether it be good or bad is nothing more than preperation meeting opportunity. Good luck will find you if you are prepared. We are going on four years now of looking like we are not prepared when an opportunity comes knocking. So whatever you are doing, knock it off. And if he doesn't agree.....show him the door.

I am willing to bet most of the things posted here would never be said to coach. I am glad everyone here has such a great BB mind, it is shocking that most of you dont have a DI coaching job somewhere or a TV anaylist job.
