My impression is that they are either worn down by the all-in effort to start the season or that they are extremely streaky and hit a fortunate string of games in the non-conf to make themselves look REALLY good.

I hate to minimize the kind of season they’ve had, because I did not think even making the tournament would be a possibility until they started dominating the non-conference like they did. But the momentum seems to have worn off.

That said, I think they are the kind of team to take this talk personally and go on a tear in the tournament. But they have also shown that they are the type of team to struggle to score 40+ points in a single game lately so it’s hard to tell which ISU team will show up.

They've surprised just when it seemed like things were pretty bleak so they may come out and have a good first round game.

Even during the non-con though the cupcakes were a bit of tough sledding offensively so matchup pending, it may also be another ugly loss.

Irregardless there needs to be more excitement for the players that haven't been to the tournament, and the one (GC) who was there once and endured the next two seasons.

The other thing is ISUs SoS is being dragged down by playing terrible teams in the 300s instead of 200s. So no practical difference, ISU would beat every +200 team, but still hurts our SoS.

Some facts to sleep on as we await our seeding/location tomorrow...

Iowa State had regular season wins against teams in their conference tournament finals from the:
  • Big 12 (Texas Tech)
  • Big East (Creighton)
  • Big Ten (Iowa)
  • AAC (Memphis)
  • Southland (SE Louisiana)
Iowa State has played 32 games
  • 18 of those games were against NET top 50 teams
  • 23 of the 32 are against top 77 NET teams.

Iowa State has 9 Q1 wins
  • top 5 in the country

Iowa State has a SOS of 11th in the country

Iowa State has a SOR of 30th

Iowa State has the #10 best Adjusted Defense in the country

Point is...this season is still insanely impressive after we won 2 last year. We're likely headed to 8/9 seed and yeah that sucks but given we are in the tourney, just making it is gravy to me. I can't wait to see how we do against non-Big 12 teams. Maybe we are toast and **** the bed...who knows. But I can't wait to see them fight another day.

Go Cyclones
Thank you for sharing

After you lay all this out our season seems even more surprising that it was. If you laid all that out at the 1st of the yr I think everyone would have been grateful for .500. Thanks for putting this season in perspective.

ISU was turning people over like crazy before the Big 12 season, and they were turning those turnovers into points. The big 12 was rugged on defense, no doubt, but it is really a matter of teams figuring out what ISU was doing on offense and defense, coupled with too few guys playing really hard. Not sure Foster or the other guy that left would have made a difference, but it is always nice to have options.
