Love everything Kempt did for the team this year but I hope Zeb improves enough to win the job.
Much stronger arm and he looked capable this year when he was in there.

I think it's great that Zeb has some serious competition vs. someone with this much experience, and will have to work for the spot. It means he'll have to do very well to win over a guy who may not have been the greatest physically, but did enough to be crucial in wins.

Add in that it sounds like they're literally great friends and you've got a great mentor for Zeb as it sounded like KK is very cerebral.

Win-win and another win if there's good progress/hope for others on the depth chart.

A few quick hits today just for my forum followers ... not gonna promote this anywhere else.

1 - Hearing that Re-al Mitchell could be the guy in the Joel Lanning roll next year - on offense (he won't be playing LB). They love him that much as a runner. Heard he is the second fastest guy on the team already.

2 - I am now planning on Kempt being back. It isn't official but there'd have to be an odd turn of events for this to not happen (knock on wood).

3 - Campbell just fell in love with this Purdy kid. Wasn't an active "go recruit over Re-al" thing. I think Matt will comfortably use multiple QBs in the future as he sees fit, like we saw last year.

" High tide rises all ships" I can't see how having KK back in the QB room is bad at all. I think the competition alone would raise both their games to a new level. Seems like a steady and high character guy, which after losing some great senior leadership will be huge. He doesn't lose his cool and would be a nice calming influence to an offense with lots of young potential. He knows what it takes and has won big games for us. Also, it wouldn't hurt to have a good mentor and senior leader for that young qb room with Zeb, Moore, and Re-al.

Also, I never understood the fascination with bringing in a grad transfer to play qb. Seems like the learning curve would be awfully high for that position to be just a plug and play. I could be wrong.

The QB position for 2018 really did a 180 in the last few weeks. Adding a 6th(?) year senior and freshmen who is apparently talented enough to put on the field in some capacity next year.

I'm still pessimistic about them getting significantly more out of the O line next year, but if they do the ceiling for this team is pretty high.

I'm excited about ISU football in January...

I still think the rest of the big 12 are going to know what kempt is bringing next year and will play accordingly now. Zeb will let us run with Montgomery or stretch plays downfield. Zeb also runs better than kk.
You got a point on the others teams knowing how to play against a Kempt led offense. I just wish there was a way the the team and coaches would know what our opponents returning players are bringing so we would have the same advantage. Oh wait......

KK basically is a graduate transfer if he has another year, only one with a good rapport with the rest of the team, coaches, experience, and knowledge of the Cyclone offense.

I doubt we could find somebody on the open market, unless they were a Russell Wilson (in Madison) level of proven stud, that would be a better option than KK.

If I'm Zeb, I'm wondering what my future is at Iowa State with the possibility of Kempt coming back and all of the comments about Re-al.

I wouldn't be too concerned about Zeb. He will have every opportunity to improve and earn the starting spot. And the way college football works, there's almost no chance Kempt plays every down next year if he's the starter. Zeb will get plenty of chances to play and prove himself.

I remember during an interview this season, Kempt talked about how he and Zeb practiced and prepared together every week like either of them could start, even when Park was around. That tells me that they are both team guys who will work together no matter who is labeled starter for that week.

I also don't think Re-al getting a shot to be on the field is a real threat to Zeb either. Re-al will get that opportunity because of his pure athleticism, which is a dimension that neither Kyle nor Zeb possess. Re-al will be more of a specialist than anything. At least right now, I don't think Re-al is making all the throws that Zeb can.

Zeb is only a RS Soph. He is lined up to have two years as the unquestioned starter after 2018. If he were a Junior this year or a Senior, then I would imagine he'd have a lot more questions about his role on the team.

The key to Kempt is his decision-making process, didn't have a lot of 3 & out's and this helped ISU be successful this year. My concern with Zeb, he is a gunslinger, and that could lead to higher turnover rate. I still believe ISU margin of error is minimal when you stack them up against the rest of the Big12. The coaches want KK back, and I'm sure they believe his leadership helps next year's team, not a lot Sr's coming back.
Obsolutely! Kyle coming back to mentor the younger QBs is where he could have his most value. Sure, he wants to play, but if he doesn't, his commitment to helping the team won't wavier.

If Re'al doesn't redshirt, the question for me because how is Devon Moore progressing after being injured all year? Admitting to knowing nothing about him, but I'm routing for him simply because he's an Iowa kid.

So Re-al can't play LB? Do not want...:)

In all honesty KK coming back tells Zeb one thing....time to bust ass if I want to play because if I'm better I trust this staff to see it. KK around makes everyone work that much harder.

Does everyone remember how much better Sam Richarson got after being labeled the man?

if KK wasn't going to start why would he fight to get another year? Seems odd to come back to ride the aluminum.
I'd think he's thinking he's the odds on favorite to start but I like that CW said that Campbell wouldn't just give the job to anyone without earning it.
