Interesting Grant Mahoney Stat

Oh, so you expect him to be perfect.......:skeptical:

Well thats a different situation, We better hold kicker try outs then....

What are you talking about? You said that Mahoney isn't missing kicks -- it's the fault of the blocking. I pointed out five kicks he flat out missed in two games.

I believe we have failed on five extra points this season. That is a big deal.

If he starts his approach a bit earlier it will help a lot, but the interior line has GOT to do a better job of blocking. The kicks may be a little low, but they are far from looking like Tennessee's kicks. If Mahoney kicks a fraction earlier and the line gets the blocks better, Mahoney will not miss many kicks.

Suit up.

18-22 extra points (2 blocked)...... 10-16 on FG's (1 blocked that I know of)

I'm done you guys argue....have fun.:skeptical:

I think Grant Mahoney is a fine kicker. When everything else is executed around him.

we need to snap it deeper on extra points so he can get it up in the air so it will not be blocked.

You can't do that. Then you get them blocked around the edge. There's a reason they do 7 yards.

Well, that wouldn't do much good. I suck. But when I miss five kicks, I wouldn't expect someone on an internet message board claim that I haven't.

I trust that Mahoney is the best kicker on our team.

Is there some kind of rule about how deep the holder has to be on field goal/PAT tries?? If it is a PAT or short/medium field goal, why not snap it a few yards deeper to give the ball more height by the time it reaches the line of scrimmage??

As for who is really to blame - the linemen or the kicker, I think it has been a little of both on the blocked kicks. There has been a little too much penetration, where the line is at fault. However, with the great offensive line that we have, do you really think it is their fault every time? Mahoney needs to be getting more air underneath those kicks, mainly the short ones. The defense shouldn't be able to get their paws on a PAT so often.

Anyways, I'd really like to hear about where the holder is supposed to line up and if it can be changed....

Mahoney is not missing kicks, he is having his kicks blocked. There is a big difference. Snap, hold, angle, trajectory have all been fine. He need the interior line to Block and not give ground.

Unless you guys expect him to kick curve balls around the rushing defensive lines hands...

I worded this poorly, It should read Mahoney is having more of a problem with blocked kicks then misses...That is my opinion

Here are his stats...

FIELD GOALS FGM-FGA Pct 01-19.. 20-29.. 30-39.. 40-49.. 50-99.. Lg Blk
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Mahoney,Grant 10-16....62.5 0-0 ..... 1-1..... 4-6 ... 2-4 ... 3-5... 52 ...1

FG SEQUENCE Iowa State
----------------------------------------------------
North Dakota State ...(38),57,(50)
Iowa .........................(46)
Kent State................. (20),(37)
Army......................... (50),41
Kansas State.............. (32)
Kansas....................... (34) -
Baylor......................... 50,(45),35,30
Nebraska.................... (52),49

Numbers in (parentheses) indicate field goal was made.

as you can see he made 6 of his 1st 7 missing only a 57 yarder against NDSU. He had a miss against Army, and a Bad Day at Baylor. His 18-22 extra points with 2 blocked (imo) is not bad, but then I do not expect him to be perfect....

Can anyone tell me the surfaces he has kicked off of (Baylor) the conditions of the surface, has he had the same snapper and holder on every attempt or have their been injuries to them or himself...

Until someone can answer all these questions, I think it is unfair to blame Grant Mahoney the individual.

I got faith in my buddy Grant, if your line learns to block for 1.5 seconds he won't miss many his leg is getting stronger all the time he just needs to keep his confidence up, that's tough when your getting the ball batted back in your face every other kick(I know this is an exaggeration)

Maybe we can also call some of them a bit of the sophomore slump, however the ones I have seen are linemen not blocking.

Part of the problem would be having a 6'2" 200" Safety #46 as your snapper trying to block 300+ Defensive Lineman..... Giving way too much ground after the snap and standing up....?
1st pic is extra point....2nd is FG......sad we need to block better...

Dakota is not a safety, he is a dedicated long snapper.

Thanks...1st time I've ever seen DS (dedicated snapper)as a postion title...
he needs to hold ground better, because other teams will be coming.

When in college I long snaped, could you tell me does ISU interlock legs...?
We use to but injuries may be greater now, because of the strength of the athletes are greater....

The only problem with interlocking with him is that if his *** gets run over, the guys next to him are going down too.

IIRC the splits between the LS and the G (Reggie, Trey) was pretty large, I would guess they would tighten that up, as well as snapping the ball a bit deeper from now on.

They (Coaches) know better than us, but adjustment and timing are critical to the success of a conversion of fg. It's not all on just one guy (Mahoney) like some posters would like to believe.....Heck, they let the kid try a 57 yarder early on, if the Coaches did not have faith in the kicker and this unit that would never happen....

Thanks for the info.....

Perhaps I've been overanalyzing his technique since the blocked/missed PATs started, but does anyone feel like he's a little bit shy on PAT attempts? The one attempt at Nebraska, the ball was snapped, there was a slight hesitation, then he went in to kick the ball. Maybe I'd have to see the video again, but I knew before the ball was even kicked that it would be blocked.

Mahoney does a fantastic job otherwise, and those 50+ yarder FGs are definitely nothing to sneeze at. He can really pummel the ball -- except when a miss or a block gets to his head.

Really, he's looked more tentative since the block vs. KState. That was his only miss in his career to that point. Then, all of a sudden vs Kansas he misses one wide left and wide right. That is HARD to do from 20 yards out. Like he was overthinking it. I think he got back to just kicking again, but nu was just pulverizing through our O-Line on Saturday. I think all of the missed kicks were missed for different reasons...
