My favorite is all of the Hawk fans are saying "biggest win of the Fran era?"

what...no meaningful march wins?

To be fair, they're known as "March situations" over there.

Impressed that they won but thoroughly unimpressed with both teams. For the record, ISU hasn't impressed me yet either. Tonight's the night.

They haven't put a full game together yet, but that 2nd half of the Georgia State game sure was fun to watch.

That stat makes it all the more a quality win for Iowa, but Iowa won this on grit and hustle. They still seem to be offensively challenged and did not look like a good offensive team.

I will mention one big positive for Iowa. Last year they had a real lack of a player stepping up at the end of games and making a play and hitting a shot. Gesell took it to the rack for a 3 pt play towards the end of the game. Maybe that gives him confidence to be able to do that later again in the season if they need a clutch shot.

Gesell driving the lane especially in late minutes is a standard operating procedure for the Hawkeyes. From my recollection, he has missed a lot more of these shots than made, he usually looks a bit out of control, but he made it last night and it looked good. UNC should have known that and been prepared defensively. If we are up on them late in the game, we better be prepared for this move.

and this move typically goes to the right...and includes a high-arching prayer of a shot thrown from an out-of-control spazmatic who will then fall deliberately into the crowd just to the right (if you're facing the basket) of the basket.

the only thing worse than watching Iowa basketball is watching tape of the girls I went to high-school with playing 6 on 6. They are predictable and awkward...in nearly every single way.

Iowa players' FG % after 8 games?

Clemmons .409
Uthoff .398
Gesell .327
Oglesby .250
Jok .222

Gesell raised his to an impressive .327 after going 6/10 last night.....

.. I love when Fran describes a player as 'TREMENDOUS' (every day)

he has a low bar for success

This is true. Gesell has attempted to drive to the bucket multiple times in late game situations. It hasn't been a good decision many times though. Last night he made a good decision. His defender was basically standing upright. I'm sure that guy will get blasted while watching film. He was in no position to get in front of Gesell and Mike realized that and took it to the bucket. Thankfully he finished for once.

The Hawks are not a good shooting team, and last nights game was bad even compared to their average. They are playing good defense though, and at some point their shots will start to fall at a higher rate. A win against UNC in Chapel Hill should give them much needed confidence.

Yeah, that was a rather ugly game, but a nice win for them. Good, I hope they are rated when we play them. I like the Gessel kid, he is tough and plays hard. Nice to see him get the win over Paige, the one with all the natural talent.

Though Iowa had a bad night shooting the ball that front court is going to give us fits. If Iowa hits any of their threes against us (they probably missed 10 wide wide open threes last night) it could be a long night for us. Defensively they looked solid. UNC shouldn't be #12. But good win for Iowa.

Why do these Hoks always have to look like a bunch of goobers?

Always funny when ISU fans make fun of the way Iowa's players look, when Iowa's players look like about 95% of the students at ISU. Only taller.

That's a really good win for Iowa, especially on the road. I'm not shocked that apparently most ISU fans find that difficult to say. Had we just knocked off a top 15 team on the road this board would be going crazy.

That wasn't a low scoring game because of good defense, unless it's good defense to leave someone so wide open it messes with their head. Neither team hit wide open shots. Ugly game, but no one will remember that part of it come March.

Hopefully they sneak in the top 25 for the ISU game.

Iowa is a half-court offense away from being a really good team. They just don't have anyone who can slash outside of Gesell - and he has trouble finishing.

I guess i didn't see UNC Get to many wide open shots. Their big guys missed bunnies, yes but other than watching paige jack up 25 footers that were contested iowa played pretty good defense. Their bigs and Gessel won them that game.

Majority of their points came off bunines. Keep them out of the interior and force them to shoot and you beat Iowa. They cant shoot.

That is a nice win for Iowa... Congrats to them. Now call me when they actually make the NCAA Tournament and win a game... It's only been 13 years since they last won a game in the Big Dance.
