Iowa State has made the top six for four-star forward Aamir Simms, per a tweet on Tuesday. He has a protected Twitter account but this is the graphic with his top schools. The 6-foot-7-inch, 200-pound, small forward is the No. 133 prospect in the country, according to 247 Composite.

I've been told that Iowa State is still primarily focused on the guys with visits scheduled at this time (i.e. KeyShawn Feazell and Darius McNeill), but Simms is on Iowa State's radar and we could see him schedule a visit a little later in the fall. Will be a name to keep an eye on.

Kinda sorta related, but is the No. 133 prospect in basketball really a 4 star recruit? I understand that being in the Top 150 is pretty good, but I guess I didn't realize that there were that many 4 star recruits.

Different sources have him at different rankings. Keep in mind that 24/7 is a composite, so it's an average. Pretty sure that his composite has him at a 3 star.

What is the ranking cutoff for sources like Scout, Rivals, and 247 for a 4 star recruit vs. a 3 star? I'm just getting the feeling that we're seeing more 4 star rankings that would have been considered 3 stars a few years ago. Am I off base here?

IIRC, Rivals ranks their top 100 as 4*. Not really sure about the other sites.

I believe 247 is based on the composite rating. So as long as the rating is over a cutoff, they would be ranked a 4 star.

Rivals has 109 guys ranked 4 stars or higher. Scout has 140, 247sports (non composite) has 127, and ESPN has 194.

Looks like he's planning to visit in September

https://basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/four-star-simms-narrows-focus

Iowa State: “A lot of people are surprised I have them on the list, and I even surprised myself by having them on there, but I want to give them a chance because I like what they did with Georges Niang the last few years. I like how they developed him and I think we’re very similar. I like how it’s off the beaten path and I could focus more on basketball.”

WHAT’S NEXT?: Simms plans to take official visits to Clemson, Iowa State and VCU during September. After those three visits, he’ll sit down with his family and coaches to discuss what he’s going to do from that point. He could take his last couple visits or possibly come to a decision at that time.

That's an interesting quote. I don't really see who is surprised by us being on his list and why. Maybe it's just because of location.

I can't tell if that's a good thing or not...

My initial feeling is it's not a good thing? Means people are questioning why he would have us there planting a subtle negative seed about us. Probably nowhere near a deal-breaker or anything but I'd certainly like it better if people were jumping for joy we made his list.

If this is the case it could be a positive for us. We have a great culture here, great facilities, and once he gets here he can leave very impressed by the staff and team that it surpasses his expectations. Add that to him noting that he's seen how we can develop talent, and how location allows him to focus on basketball more, it could all just click for him if he gets here with a less-than-perfect view of us, and leaves blown away/

I also read it as a negative. Kind of "here's my one that's kind of a non-serious lark in my top 6." Guess we'll find out.

Get 'em on campus - that's the big hurdle so there's that!

Good point. Maybe because the rest of his top 6 are east/southeast schools. Except Notre Dame. So who knows. Clemson is the surprise in my opinion.

The surprise is cuz of location. The talk was he wanted to play in the acc and or east coast. We are the only school on his list that doesn't meet either of those listed criteria. So yeah, surprise! But he explained himself well on why Iowa state and I think we have a legit shot at him.

Well he's only taking officials to ISU, VCU and Clemson then may make a decision or visit other schools, so getting one of the three guaranteed visits is fun.
