Uh oh... @TravisHines21

So one of the foremost names in NCAA compliance monitoring says ISU's 1,400 improperly documented calls could/should be a major violation.

RT @John_Infante 79 violations out of 750K phone calls doesn't seem like a big deal but Iowa State had another issue: ow.ly/jHQ21

I get that they need to be documented, but if the actual calls weren't against the rules and its only a matter of some missing paperwork, I don't get how that's a "major" violation. Not good? Sure. But that doesn't seem like a sign of some effort on ISU's part to cheat the system.

this is why the ncaa is stupid. guys get hurt and can lose scholarships, schools cover up crimes, and making phone calls at "the wrong time" is a violation? please.

Technically, the 1400 are a violation, but hardly a major one. Here is the more accurate description of the 1400, according to the DM Register article:

The release also stated that Iowa State discovered that many coaches did not properly document 1,405 calls in which they attempted — but failed — to reach a recruit. Failing to document those calls — even dropped calls and calls that result in voice messages — is an NCAA violation.

Not even calls made at the wrong time. The 1405 are call attempts that didn't go through.

If you read the Infante article he says that it may be a major if the failure to log failed calls results in them counting as legitimate contacts to the recruit and ultimately results in the number of permissible calls being regularly exceeded. If they tried to call a recruit and failed and even with that call counted they didn't exceed the number of allowed contacts it is moot.

I'm sticking to my guns that the calls were all recruit's mothers/girlfriends trying to get a hold of CFH. :jimlad:

The NCAA, in it's completely inconsistent wisdom, will drop the hammer. If you are at the right school, you can pay your players. If you're not, you are to be made an example for the slightest violation of the most obscure rule.

True. Caltech is a major case in point.

We felt it necessary to self-impose recruiting restrictions. Thats the lifeblood of every program... So maybe its a bigger deal than just an administrative error.
