Agreed, however very pleased to see Ngoyi. I don't really always trust high school athletic testing numbers but his reported speed and jumping numbers were absolutely wild. If he can turn that into early playing time, he could be a big player for ISU, and soon at that.

I just looked at Chase's stats out of curiosity, to discover he kicked in a grand total of 4 games for NEB. Our standing kicking staff was beaten out by a dude who has kicked ~15 total times in his career.

He was 100% on XPs during that time, though.
I don't see the big deal. It's not any worse than getting beat out by an incoming freshman who has never played in a college game.

In the WRNL first half season preview podcast. They mentioned they got to interview the new ST coach. Jordan Langs said that before Iowa State had pretty much a fair catch or let it bounce rule. He said that Iowa State needs to start returning punts because it is a way to shorten the field for your offense every drive. Expect punts being returned this year.
This drove me nuts. Every other team in the country can figure out how to return punts. I'd like to see if there is actual evidence that it helped with ball security. We still muffed 1-2 per year.

Trying to get more info on Gaines. Last year I was told he was having trouble learning the playbook and the signals used at the line of scrimmage.

I think it was honestly because we were truly that scared to **** up. I love Matt Campbell but I think that's been such a horrible move. I think the 2019 Iowa game got into his head and he has said "**** it" we're not allowing that to hurt our field position, which analytically I'd say that it's actually killed our field position because lack of aggression has caused us to not field balls (2021 vs Iowa) and you literally don't gain any yards either.

I returned punts in HS my junior and senior year. It's not that hard. Rule #1 is catch the ******* ball no matter what. You're back there because the coaching staff trusts you, and only you, to stop the ball from going behind you. Essentially the ball has to be shanked for you to not catch the ball. When you do catch the ball, just make one guy miss and go up the field. If you literally just do that simple thing, it's positive.

YES! Might not be data to back this up, but we have to be dead last in "field position lost by allowing the punt to roll around" Catch the dang punt!!

Yep lol it's literally the golden rule. Catch the damn ball. Anything else is just icing on the cake.

I always thought we could catch and dive forward for 2 yards at minimum.

I heard it said earlier in this thread I believe or maybe it was another, but the depth chart is only as good as the paper it is written on. I am certain we will see Gaines, Parkes, and even Essex at some point, and that is just at the WR position. I think Campbell knows that in this climate of football, if you recruit studs and dont play them, kiss them goodbye. Again, the depth chart exists because they have to have something, but its hard to put any stock in it whatsoever

The punt bouncing was so infuriating. Seems like our returners have generally not been coached well at how to determine spins or anticipating which way a ball will bounce. Too many punts that bounced at the 35 and rolled back to inside the 20. Too many punts that bounced at the 20 and rolled inside the 10. Bounce at the 5? Die on the 5 or maybe bounce forward a few yards but still inside the 10.

We don't even return punts so we just go with whoever is best at making the fair catch.
I thought about that after I posted. People here have said we don't focus on the return game (kicks or just punts, or both?). I hope that changes. Their are some opportunities there, field postion or some big plays.

Becht and Kohl playing. I am sure it has been reported before does anybody know how they have performed in practices?

Let's hope he doesn't end up like another kid that tested high and ended up switching to defense. I think Ngoyi will be pretty good though. Seems like a solid route runner and has good hands from what I have seen in highlight videos.

They’ve both looked good. Kohl further ahead than expected for a true freshman which is why Becht isn’t named the starter like they expected. Well Rocco will probably still “start”, but they are both going to play and likely make a decision after seeing them both in a live game.

I believe they have had 'elite' level of practices. And you can throw Tanner in with that elite unit.

:):jimlad: I'm just havin' a little fun.
And for another freshman, Wyatt is almost there. We are just not sure which elite QB we want to start.

I think if I was a wide receiver who had already red-shirted, and was buried on the depth chart, I would ask the ST coach if I could try catching punts and kickoffs. Spend a good amount of time with the punters in practice and learn the spins and rotations and catch the ball. It would get me on the field every game and give me a chance to help the team. I am not a fan of a starting receiver being the punt returner as it can lead to coaches wanting to fair catch to avoid an injury that could drastically affect the offense. Just my thoughts.
