Is the Baylor game going to be on TV in Cedar Rapids?

I think we'll need to pull it in with rabbit ears, but I haven't checked yet

That's correct. You can (maybe) pull it up if you plug the cable directly into the tv and not go through your cable box. Otherwise, you have to try bunny ears and hope it comes in. If that fails, pray it's not blacked out on ESPN3.

I hate that stupid 9.3 ****. I don't get why they prioritize the State Basketball Tournament over the ISU game because if you want to see that game, you are probably there. Just my thoughts.

I am glad the game is on 9.3, as it will be a good picture, but I find it hard to believe that a game between the Clones and the 10th ranked team in the country isn't a better draw than looping weather clips.

This is correct. Of the programming we will have on those three channels during that window, the ISU game will net us the FOURTH most money. Yes, the sponsors we have for the weather during that two hour block we are pre-empting would have paid us more money than the commercials we show during the game. So, yes, we are actually losing money to put the Cyclones on the air.

Where and how the games are shown has zero to do with loving/hating the Cyclones or loving/hating the Hawks. It comes down to how difficult the university's contract is with existing television partners and, for those of us asked to air the "leftovers" - how much money can we make (or even cover our costs) for airing.

I find it interesting that KCRG is criticized for putting this on 9.3 when no other media outlets in our market would even pick it up on ANY channel.

There are more Cyclone fans that you might think in our company, but threads like this make it difficult to want to work with the university when it is in a spot and needs us to help them out - and we end up losing money on the deal.

From your tone it would seem you don't currently have a relationship with ISU and don't care to. Perhaps I need to start watching Channel 2 and 7 more setting ISU aside. Nice touch. IB

maybe your advertisers should know by now that people don't watch commericals during "regular" programming anymore.......the invention of DVR's have allowed me to skip every commerical during my favorite shows for years now. However during sporting events i would like to watch them live and forced to view commericals.

This. Those Tier 1 & 2 TV packages have increased dramatically in recent years BECAUSE DVR proof live sporting events are so bankable, compared to everything else.

Show choirs and girls high school basketball probably gets produced cheaper, but far fewer people watch. I'm not saying KCRG's strategy is wrong--they can do what they want--but it isn't particularly aggressive or growth minded. If they don't want to play with the big boys, they shouldn't. But it isn't like the cost of the programming is out of line. It's at the going rate for live high major division one basketball. It's up to KCRG to sell the ad time.

I find that VERY interesting and it bring up a couple questions/thoughts.

1. This is the FOURTH best PROFIT you can make. I assume the weather is very cheap to produce. Even if you could sell more adds, the cost/price is the real result you are comparing against.

2. How hard does your staff work to sell adds for ISU BB games.

3. If you had a consistent product (ie every game shown on the same channel) would that improve your audience and/or sales?

4. Do other stations have the ability/right to show the games? Or, does KCRG own the contract for that area?

Good insight into the process and I appreciate your candor/honesty on the issue. I can understand the lopsided viewership of uofi/ISU in that area, but am surprised you don't get more casual viewers. Typically, the rival markets are almost as high as the home markets (ie Washington DC typically has the second highest viewership of Dalls Cowboys games).

Some good questions here. In response to #'s above...

1. Your thought process is correct (and I was actually thinking gross dollars for this illustration), though in this specific case the costs of the content are quite similar. When the university comes to us via Cyclone Sports Properties aka Learfield, they are usually pretty desperate to clear the game so it doesn't cost as much in hard dollars - it's the lost opportunity dollars of advertising that becomes the issue.

2. A few others in this thread have asked/accused similarly. A lot of ways to explain this, but I'll try to go to the most logical: If you are on straight commission and have fairly limited inventory available to sell, would you not work pretty hard to sell remaining inventory? Let's assume the worst and that our reps only gravitate towards selling the easiest inventory to sell - does it not say a lot that it is easier to sell a weather loop than a pretty good ISU men's hoops team?

3. This is a VERY insightful observation and the answer is YES. If we had been given the ability to show a majority/every game on either 9.1 or 9.2 for the season, viewership would likely be improved because promotion and planning would be easier and casual viewership would rise. However, because a) the Big12 TV contract is strange for the schools to manage and b) Learfield has gotten into bed with Mediacom - the rest of us are locked out early. Ironically, when Mediacom later can't/refuses to pick up games - local broadcasters are literally begged to pick up the games late in the game making it tough on us because we've already locked in other programming which we've already promised to advertisers.

4. We do not have any sort of contract with Learfield, and neither do any of the other locals, nor are any of us given the opportunity to bid/negotiate to have the contract. Learfield manages that as best they can given the confines of whatever the Big12 contract is at the time. Because it's easy to reach the entire state in one sale, they usually choose to give Mediacom first shot, which I understand. However, when Mediacom hangs them out on certain games, they then get on the phone to local markets. We usually get the first call in our area because we have the largest audience, but they also know that KGAN/FOX will never carry them because all the decisions are made in New York and KWWL rarely broadcasts non-NBC sports (rare UNI games being an exception). KWKB has picked up several of the prime time weeknight games the last few weeks as we have chosen not disrupt ABC programming and have had high school sports scheduled on 9.2 already.

Believe me, I get the frustration of not being able to see the games. I've been a Cyclone fan since I was 4 (and I'm a hair older than that now). There's just not a lot of ways to appease a small (but vocal) audience when not having the time to plan for it. I'll be watching the game tonight with an OTA antenna since I have DirecTV. Not optimal, but beats sitting in front of my laptop.

This is for ClonePackof1.

I have DirecTV and have the AM-21 off-air tuner connected to their receiver.

Channel 9.3 does not show up in the DTV guide, only 9-1 & 9-2.
I get 9-3 on my off-air only TV that is hooked up to the same antenna.

That TV scans for channels. I don't think the DTV AM-21 scans channels. It seems to contact DTV for available channels.

I'm posting in case there is something you could do to get DTV to add 9-3.

Thanks

You might be one step better than me, I can only get 9 (or 9.1) on my DTV guide. They don't carry 9.2 or 9.3 on their DirecTV menu/guide, I have to get both of those channels over the air (Mediacom and ImOn do carry all three).

The way my Samsung TV's are connected is that I have to switch over to the OTA and then just tune to 9.2 or 9.3 (or 7.2 or 7.3 if there is anything I want to see on KWWL's sub-channels). I was able to simply auto-tune to them using my TV's tuner.

Hope that helps.
