The lack of Guard play on this team is killing us. Every good team ISU has ever had has had really good guards. Diante is not a point guard he is a non shooting two guard. GMAC made a big mistake by not getting better guards. Look at the good guards in the Big 12 it very clear why we are not winning. ISU proved this year it does not matter if you have 2 NBA draft choices in college basketball if you do not have good guards.

I agree with the general point. Good guardplay makes teams good.

But, Diante is third in the Big 12 in assiste/game. I don't think he's great, but they ask him to do an awful lot all things considered.

Yep it is the biggest issue of this team. Not having someone that can step up make hard shots and go off for 30 just becaues is killing this team. That and the fact that we dont have anyone to guard the other teams top guards.

For the record, we had pretty good guards in 2006.

Diante has played great the last 3-4 games. He is not the problem. It is easy to make him the scapegoat, but he has been solid all year.

There is more to this team not being able to get it done than just guard play.

Who are the two NBA caliber players?

GoShow, you're clearly not happy with any answer if it doesn't include condemnation of the coach.

We get it.

Agreed. We get it we suck. Whether its players, coaches or administration..who cares? What we have and have had the past few years is not good, and speculate as you may the reason why doesnt matter because no matter what the coach will have to take teh blame.

why does garrett think he can score?

honestly, anyone else wondering?

he needs to find the two players that actually have a shot at the NBA and let them go to work, im sick of his dribble around, miss a layup, throw a ball out of bounds, miss a jumper gameplan

Making shots is not asking too much. If he could hit water from a boat, defenses wouldn't sag down low all night. He strikes no fear in a defense whatsoever because he can't hit shots. When the defense stretches it's amazing how things open up.

I agree it would obviously help if he was a better shooter. He shoots 43% from the field and 33% from 3pt. Not terrible, but obviously could be better. But I meant he's the only guy that can create his own shot, or create in general really. Almost all of that falls on his shoulders.

I think we're really one solid 2 guard away from being a good team. If you give us a 2 guard that can avg 15 points a game, as opposed to Lucca/SC's 8 points per game we would have won 9 more games by my count (based purely off point differential of course).

Ugh.

Well you are doing what everybody else does now. Man one player and we would be good.

The problem is that one player was supposed to be Gilstrap. Two years ago it was Lucca, and Eickmeyer. Next year it's supposed to be Phillips.

I hope this kid is finally that guy. But I want to know how the message went from "I am building a program here" to going juco crazy.

Do you watch a lot of college basketball? It is not even funny the disparity between us and the top teams. Much of it is guard play. We are limited in the backcourt (and we were before Lucca left, and Booze got hurt).

A big part of that problem was playing walk-ons instead of scholarship freshman the last couple of years.

Of course next year comes and we lose Brackins, and possibly Gilstrap, then we will read that we are one really good 3 and 4 away from being good.

I just meant to illustrate how little we're getting out of the 2 guard spot. I dont mean to say, "look we're so close." I suppose that's a byproduct. But I just meant to show how much better we could be with a solid 2.

Even when we're healthy we're still lagging behind the top six teams in the league at that spot.

Don't forget the 2 we needs to be able to play D and create, maybe draw some fouls. Lucca just stood on the wing. I think it was his second to last game they talked about how good of a FT shooter he was, yet had only been to the line like13-14 times.
