ISU is 2-10 in last 12 games

Since walloping Ohio 43-10 last year, ISU has lost 10 of its last 12 games. What really hurts is that 8 of the 10 losses were one-score losses. Many of them were the result of missed FGs and untimely turnovers. And as good as our defense is, they hardly ever force a turnover, and turnovers are particularly rare in the games we lose

Our close loss list is kind of a joke. We keep it just close enough, score a late TD and have the smallest of chances to win and always lose.

Campbell has a tremendous eye for talent (except perhaps the OL recruits) but his game day decision-making is the worst I've seen in almost 40 years of watching ISU. It took him 7.5 years to finally let the QB sneak it on 3rd and short or 4th and short. I think they are a perfect 10 for 10 on those. So I guess Campbell can change his ways in some respects. But there are still many other bad decisions (timeouts, play calls, tempo, etc) that keep showing up in our close losses.

You just can't always wait until you are behind 2 scores in the 4th quarter to change your offensive game plan. That has to sink in. Right?

I would give Campbell another year if he proves he can change his ways during the rest of this season. We need to see some wins too. If we can go 4-8 again with how young this team is, Campbell deserves another year.

Where do the three wins come from to go 4-8? Which teams are so bad that we can beat them? I don't see us even coming close to any Big 12 football team on the offensive side of the ball, and after a long series of losses, our defense will tire of being on the field every game.

I’m torn. On the one hand, with the exception of the TCU game we are in every game. That is a huge departure from Cyclone teams of the past… unfortunately the final results are similar…

Really good post.....he, like CPR and McCarney and every other coach pre-NIL had to sell optimism and the future. He had his opportunity and the career arc is not where we want it. The freaking targeting calls in the Alamo Bowl still loom so large to me.....we win that, what other key recruits might we have gotten then and maybe we have a better cadre of players with Brock....Anyway, some of the O-line recruits? woof. Mabye they were academic and cumulative GPA reasons?

I don’t know… clearly we had the worst record possible Purdy’s senior year …but our D is still awesome. Any offense at all can turn things around. By the way, OSU looks worse than we do…

--> Note: I'm being kind with one-score games definition. Iowa game wasn't truly one-score. Nor was Baylor 2022 or Clemson bowl game. And a few others, those are off the top of my head. Ohio game barely counts.

To be fair, a few one-score wins were scoreboard-only, too.

But now we’ve moved from keeping it one-score vs. Big 12 opponents that average 45 points per game and traditionally kill ISU, to “keeping it close” vs. a MAC team by going scoreless for 3 quarters.
