There are more schools that participate in Baseball and Basketball because they are cheaper for the schools to have.....has nothing to do with poupularity.

The only way anyone would ever pay attention to baseball is if they sold beer at the games.

Yeah, well, that's how it was with football during the 1997 season (my first year at ISU, and the atmosphere at JTS was so bad I didn't buy tix again until 2000), and the fans eventually came back (look at the upper-left hand corner of this page if you don't believe me)

Baseball is no different than a ton of other sports at ISU that nobody goes to. Track, gymnastics, etc. I would love ISU to have baseball again, I went to several games when I was in school.

GOD...Please let this issue DIE! No there is no reason to revive the baseball team. Just to say we have one is not a reason. Get over it baseball is gone!

I agree with whoever suggested having a baseball forum, although it won't work because no one will use it, so the people who have have been beating this dead horse will come back here......

Nobody ever beats a dead horse on message boards, I can see why you are so annoyed.

/sarcasm

Buck up or shut up. If you don't like the topic, don't read the post.

My point was comparing baseball to the relative lack of national interest in hockey and wrestling...

The "TRUE" reason ISU baseball doesn't exist...

Diamond Reflections

The Louisville Slugger baseball bat company recognized ISU’s Diamond Darlings as the best in the nation in 1974, 1977, 1979, and second best in 1980.

Although teams continue to exist on other college campuses, the ISU squad disbanded in the 1990s among gender equality discussions on campus.

I agree that we would have a better chance at succeeding in Division I hockey than in baseball, mostly because of location. An example would be men's golf this year. I think Jay Horton is actually doing quite well as our men's golf coach...we are currently better than Iowa, UNI and Drake and many Big 10 schools, but we finished last at the Big 12 Tournament this year. It's a sport, like baseball, where warm weather schools have a definite advantage over us.

No offense but you can't compare the 2, football has a large built in die-hard fanbase. ISU baseball has about 10 people semi-interested. If your 1st year was '97 then you know nothing about the history of ISU baseball. ISU had good teams in the past and nobody ever went to the games. A poster a few posts up said that they went to a few games while they were at school. Yeah well several games in 4 years is hardly a ringing endorsement, and that's coming from someone who actually even went to a game, any game.

TFEUXCAKS,

The problem is that everyone keeps asking about baseball but nobody was even willing to go when it was around. I don't even know where the baseball field was to be quite honest with you. I am a huge baseball guy but if it can't support itself then there is no need for it. Don't get me started on some of the other sports that basketball and football support.

First off, I am not a huge supporter either way on the issue, I did attend games when I was in school, and would again if the opportunity came up, but if it never happens I will not be upset either. With that being said, Knownothing said to not get him started on the other sports that basketball and football support, well, all other sports are supported by basketball and football, they are the only two revenue making sports at ISU, not even wrestling makes a profit, neither does Women's Basketball, Gymnastics or Volleyball, so Knownothing should we only be an athletic department with Football and Basketball, and if so I belive we would not be allowed in the NCAA, maybe we can be in the NAIA...............

Look at the ISU Baseball Club last year...

The 2006 season was plagued by weather form the very beginning. Of the 25 scheduled games, 13 were cancelled due to bad weather conditions, leaving the Cyclones to only play 12 games, finishing with a conference record of 5-6, and an overall record of 5-7. The 2007 Spring team will return a strong core group of 16 players, setting up what should be a very exciting team next year.

How many golf meets, track meets, gymnastics events do people go to? The reason we don't have baseball was posted earlier. We needed more women's sports so something had to be cut. Many people here don't like baseball. That's fine, but not an argument for not having the sport. I don't like wrestling, but I am not saying we should dump it.

So basically your argument is the only D-I sports ISU should compete in is Football, Mens Basketball, and Wrestling. Yeah, that's a GREAT idea... :angry6wn:

My opinion is if we want to have a better athletic department we should compete in MORE sports. Bring back baseball and men's swimming. Add men's and women's hockey, men's soccer, women's field hockey, etc. Of course, that will take a lot more funding, but if JP's "Taking the Next Big Step" works, in 10 years funding more sports should not be an issue.

I completely agree. This topic is complete non-sense though, and would die to the joy of many if we all weren't so bored. Because of Title IX, baseball is not coming back. Its a waste of time discussion. Its like asking, when is ISU going to start allowing people to start bringing booze back into football games.?.. that would be never.

No, I'm not making an argument. If you will actually read the words, I'm saying nobody ever went to baseball games when we actually did have a team. It was in bold letters even..

Here's what my crystal ball tells me...

ISU will be playing men's varsity baseball within the next 7-10 years. Playing baseball is virtually required to meet the goals that ADJP has laid out for ISU's next big step.

The Big 12 plays baseball. The Big 12 does not play hockey. ISU is not going to be adding any sports that aren't played in the Big 12.

Hockey is an expensive sport that requires a bunch of scholarships (more than baseball if I read the NCAA website correctly). The revenue potential from hockey's post season Frozen Four tournament pales in comparison to the revenue generated by the CWS. Sorry, hockey dudes, it's just not in cards at ISU.

Somebody mentioned that the only way to get people to baseball games would be to sell beer. Well, when I was at ISU, really the only reason most people went to hockey games was to drink beer and get drunk. Take the beer away from hockey games, and the attendance will rival that of the baseball games.

There have been a number of successful northern baseball schools over the past few years. The "ISU can't be competitive because of the weather" argument is a non-issue. If the northern teams in the Big Ten can do it, ISU can do it was well.

I will have to bring up the old Field of Dreams argument... Build a field where people can see it from a main road, do a tiny bit of advertising and people will come... Imagine a stadium across from Hilton by MWL with a lit sign saying "baseball today vs. #2 Texas" you think people wouldn't stop by for a game?

Good point. The facilities were lacking when we did have the team. We don't need a huge stadium, but a nice field with some stands and concessions would help. But, as always, it is all about the $$$.

That's why the last thing I want to see is to have baseball rushed back... Fortunately I think Pollard is thinking the same thing... I agree they need to have basketball and football healthy. Then they need the funding in place for a small, respectable stadium along the lines of K-State's new facility... Iowa State can be successful and they were on the way to having a very good squad in 2002 with a ton of returning talent and great recruits before the axe came...
