It's important to bring up Minny and Brewster only for the reason that it shows what can be done at a losing program. The Gophers were absolutely awful last year. They won one game beating Miami OH, while losing to the likes of Florida Atlantic and North Dakota State. This season they are now 6-1 after winning a huge game today on the road at Illinois no less.
I'm not saying we hired the wrong guy in Chizik and should have tried to get Brewster instead. But seriously, what is wrong with our football team and program? The more things change it seems the more they stay the same here. We can't finish games, we can't beat any ranked teams, and we can't win on the road. These things have all been hallmarks of ISU football for years and years now with different coaching staffs as well.
College football logic doesn't seem to apply at ISU, because you would think that sooner or later we would break some of our losing trends, yet it doesn't happen. I don't have the answers. I like Gene Chizik and think he was a good hire, but to be honest I expect more at this point, and not just in the W-L department but also in the way the players execute game plans and the basic fundamentals. At times last season I thought we made breakthroughs, but now we seem to have almost regressed in many areas. Brewster and Minny show what can be accomplished at bottom tier programs. What's their secret? How did they get things turned around so quickly? Will it ever happen at ISU? I don't know.
