I just meant 24 drive hours.
I drove straight through home from Orlando after our last bowl there, just me driving. We had planned to stop somewhere to sleep about half way. But there was a predicted winter storm coming and we wanted to beat it.

I do not recommend doing that. It was a looooong drive straight through!

Yeah, that much is a lot of driving in one stint. You have the "landmines" of traffic in St. Louis, Nashville, and especially Atlanta along the way, too, depending on when you hit those cities.

I think the most I have ever done without anything more than minimal stopping (no sleep) is this one...

Left at 9:00 AM and arrived ~4:00 AM the next day. Took around 20 hours with the stops (as few as I could stand) and hitting a combination of bad weather and traffic making my way through Atlanta.

I have a limit of 12 hours in 24 (sort of like endurance racing) for myself now.

Ya I used to travel for work. I did Houston to Ft Lauderdale after working a 14 hour shift. Yuck.

Just reading through this thread, some of you clearly have issues.

Regarding flying versus driving, we offered to fly our daughter home with us. She said no, she would rather take the bus. They are 18-22 year olds, while it’s a long bus ride and the accident was very unfortunate, cross country bus rides are all part of the experience. They did get to watch the basketball game on the bus.

We (the young men of the trumpet section) brought our Game Boys and had a Pokémon tournament.

They did fly to the Big 12 Championship game. I am sure Orlando would have been pricey.
I'm glad that they are all OK! Great kids. I'm sure they had a wonderful experience, despite the bus trips and the accident.

I guess it's one more thing they will remember and be able to tell their grandkids.

Yeah, I’ve driven from CR to Orlando twice, and I’d never try it straight through solo. Came back without an overnight stay one time, but I had someone to share driving duty with me.

From CR it’s easy to bypass St. Louis, but you still have Nashville and :shudder: Atlanta to deal with. I’d push past Nashville on my way down, staying in Murfreesboro one trip and Chattanooga another time. I honestly don’t remember where I stopped on the way back the time I was by myself.

When I was in FAA training in Oklahoma City, I drove back to Rochester, Minnesota, after a full Friday shift one weekend. Drove all night, got home as the sun was coming up. Came dangerously close to falling asleep on I-35 between Ames and Clear Lake; if I hadn’t stopped for coffee there I couldn’t have made it.

After the Alamo bowl I made the trip back to the Albert Lea area non stop (besides gas and restroom, which were usually the same). Got groggy around Des Moines and an energy drink pushed me through.
