It could have been worse

Some of you are unreal. If you really thought we really had a legit shot at winning you are insane. And it's also getting real old that some of always want Rhoads gone after every game that we lose.

Yeah there was never any chance here, Baylor just insane right now. Lot of positives out there tonight. We have done massive holes in a lot if places and need some major talent upgrades at a couple spots but we should have a chance in all the games ex ou going forward

The left handed throw to start was the end of the game.

Baylor has superior athletes and their coaches were more aggressive and forced the action.

Didn't expect to win. Didn't think we had a shot.

And there lies the problem with this staff. We just go into too many games without even having a chance.

I think:

We absolutely HAD to have sustained drives in the first half to give us a chance. Even if we didn't score we needed at least 3 first downs.

Why?

Up til this game Baylor's defense hasn't had their conditioning tested. This was obvious in the second half when they showed signs of being worn down and started making mistakes we could (and did) exploit.

On defense we had some blown assignments in coverage, some poor tackling, and we were the victim of many holding non-calls, but with Baylor it truly is a pick your poison offense to defend. They are REALLY good. However, with two weeks to prepare I expected us to be better prepared.

Our offense made some great plays, but you can't step on your crank that many times against a team who has an explosive and potent offense and a solid defense. Sam had what would have been two TD passes he over threw. His INT hurt as did our on-sides kick (although admirable and close attempt). Throw in the very conservative and mind boggling run plays early and we see how important it was for everyone, coaches included, to have their "A" game. There were at least a few pass interference calls that did not get called.

We exposed Oakman as a guy who is a beast, but one with a slow motor who gives up easily. Kudos to who we had lined up against him for really doing a great job blocking him.

I think Baylor will lose a game or two to OU because OU won't make the mistakes we did and they have personnel in place to better match up. I also think they will lose to a team like us (TCU perhaps) who does play their A game.

As others have said, I think we have what it takes to win 3-4 conference games.

A better title might have been "Nothing to Be Ashamed Of".

That said, it's funny how some of the same people who sneer about everyone always getting a trophy are such belly-achers about not winning every game.

I would rather see the Cyclones do their best against nationally-ranked teams than to watch them frost a series of mushy cupcakes.

Any day or night of the week.

It could have been worse and it could have been better. Sam did some great things with his legs, and some not so great things with his arm. There were a lot of misses in the passing game that could have made the game more interesting. Better tackling would help too.

I was impressed that the ISU WR were able to get open behind the BU defense several times despite their DBs grabbing and holding on almost every play. This group is much more physical than in the past. Montgomery was out muscling guys pretty well.

To temperflares point, their cornerback, #8 I think, held our receivers all night. They held our Dline. Don't want to whine, but the refs again seeing what they want to see. I like this team did not give up or feel sorry for themselves, they could have.

Only position group I felt really underperformed was the OL. Sam R missed some throws, but that probably has a lot to do with the pressure. He is so good with his feet, and I cannot believe I am saying this, he probably did not take off running enough. Interested to see how Syria is utilized, obviously the Coaches have identified that our RB's are not making anyone miss or getting through tackles. Encouraging results for his first game.

Bryce Petty is a starting QB at any College. That hurdle was something, great arm, and the kid is perfect for the offense they run. He should be in the Heisman conversation at the end of the year.

Kudos to Briles. His team executed well. He has recruited big kids. CPR and company have their work cut out trying to beat these guys. We have got to get some bigger, nastier lineman on both sides if we are going to get atop of this league. We have some skill guys, but we cannot get the RB's holes and the WR's enough time to get open.

Sam doesn't make the lefty throw, and Brackens isn't offsides on the Baylor punt, you can shave off 7, or possibly 14 Baylor points. In the end that's not a big deal, but get those 2 opening drive scores and ISU would have looked like they were still in the game mid-3rd qtr. I think the narrative would change a bit.

Horrendous 1st half overall, but Briles still had his foot on the gas when ISU mounted a mini surge in the 3rd qtr.

No wonder Brackens has been sitting. That was an epically stupid mistake.

I wish I still had your optimism. History shows that when a team loses to an FCS team, that FBS team doesn't win much the rest of the year.
Call me crazy, but I'm starting to get a completely different vibe from last years team. Right now I think we are a better team than we were at any point last year. We will see though. I'm not gonna hold my breath on it.

The fact that no one expected to even have a chance at winning this game when it was played at home just shows how far this program is from being a successful one. You should be able to win any home game you play in and the fact that they're 1-10 at home over their last 11 home games is just inexcusable.

For those who didn't like the article, I get it. You're ****** about your team getting beat up.

But not for one second last week did I think Iowa State would win this game. Heck, I thought Baylor would cover handily.

The headline is true. That one could have been a heck of a lot worse.

I wasn't happy with Iowa State's performance but to me, the fact that they didn't roll over and die was encouraging.. Lose 71-1 again (what it was looking like at the break) and it's a demoralizing defeat that could hinder the rest of the season.

That didn't happen though.

Moral victory? I guess. But I will take that compared to what I expected to occur so I'll take it.
