Kind of think we have done enough for Jack Trice. His story is everywhere at Iowa State. WE named the stadium for him, we have a bronze statue out front. I think that is plenty to be honest.

Your name says it all.

Should get October 7, 2023 game booked with Minnesota now. Trice Minnesota game was Saturday, October 6 and he died on October 8.

Unfortunately ISU already has games booked with UNI, Iowa and @ Ohio for 2023. I'm not sure Minnesota would want anything to do with this anyway.

The 100th anniversary of the season he died is in 2023... would be neat if they scheduled a series with Minnesota for that season and had some kind some kind of ceremony to honor him.

I get what you're saying, but that would be a tough sell to Minnesota.

"Hey you guys are known around here as the team that killed our first African American player. How about donning the ol' black hat for a game commemorating him? We'll hand out pamphlets detailing the events and everything. That way everyone can get in on the hate, even the kids. Oh, and you'll have to walk out of the tunnel to Smoke on the Water."

"Let's play Iowa State so they can showcase how we intentionally killed one of their players 100 years ago."

I would think that they would want to avoid that if at all possible.
I don't think Iowa State has ever published anything stating that Minnesota intentionally killed Trice. First hand witnesses even differed on whether it was intentional or in the play of the game.

That being said, you stated pretty much what I was hinting that Minnesota might be concerned about.

No it's a great story and we have honored him greatly. Don't need to keep coming up with stuff to honor him.

understand this sentiment to a degree... I am not saying ISU has not "done enough" or that if they don't do more it is a slight to Jack Trice. They have done a lot. Naming the stadium after him is a great honor. The statue outside the stadium with the letter he wrote is a great memorial...

I guess what I am saying is that there is an opportunity to do more that would not only honor Jack Trice but would also enrich the game day experience...

To me it is not about 'have we done enough?', it's really that we have been playing football for over 120 years... it would be great to have elements of our past in our game day traditions. Something unique that makes game day special for the players and the fans. I think the story of Jack Trice is really compelling and it's a win/win - honor an ISU hero, create a richer game day experience that connects us to our history.

Agree to an extent... but I also think/hope both universities would want to honor him.

I did see that our 2023 schedule is technically full... but would imagine we could move the UNI game without too much trouble.. not sure if Pollard would want to sign us up for 11 P5 games and 0 FCS games though.

Anyway... whether they play minnesota or not, hope they do something to highlight this anniversary. Great opportunity to introduce a Jack Trice game day tradition (imo).

Ohio return game could possibly be moved to 2024 when we only have 2 non con scheduled but that would mean we would have an extra home game in 2023 and fewer home games in 2024 (Iowa is on the road in 2024).

Yeah, Minnesota has a few African-American players who might be interested in what happened 100 years ago to ISU's first African-American player.

I was trying to find Jack Trice's number... I don't think they had them on their jersey's when he played.. But was hoping to confirm that this article is correct... does anyone know if Jack Trice's number was 37?

It looks like someone uncovered the Iowa State vs. Simpson program from 1923, which would have been his only home game.

So, what made you wonder about Jack Trice's number? We have been over this a few times with Kagavi's research, but your inquiry seems new.

Hate to say it, but Minnesota could not care less about Iowa State and the Jack Trice story.
That doesn't mean we can't continue to honor Jack and add traditions on our campus.

I assume you're referencing the Trice uniforms? (As opposed to the '07 CyHawk throwbacks).

It wouldn't surprise me if they hold off doing a Trice-uni again until 2023, near 100th anniversary of his death. They made a good attempt at the design, but being restrained on size of jersey numerals leading to the big white numbers detracted from its effectiveness. I know some fans agree with that, others don't.

Yeah, the JT ones.

It was just new to me... I was curious what his number was.. so did a google search and found Kagavi's research. I wasn't able to find anything else. I was just surprised I could not find anything official on it from ISU.

Just posted here to see if anyone was familiar with this and why there has not been any official confirmation.

Well, join the club. We all appreciate Kagavi's research and some of us enjoy his presentation style more than others (I love it). But we all wonder why he is treated like a favorite son.
