Jake was a monster most of the game. A healthy Dutch would help immensely, as will Laing in the rotation.

DEs did not contain well -whether on the option or on straight drop back passes (got too far upfield & pushed out by the tackles, leaving outside lanes).
Willie Scott is the best @ pursuing down the line w/o losing containment. Lattimer gets a little over-zealous in his pursuit @ times, as did Nelson.
I think with Neal in the DE rotation this get addressed some. If anything, Neal will stick to his assignments.

The key with Iowa will be to stick with gaps & play assignment football vs their running game. DE will need to be there for the cut-back on their zone running plays. Will also have to stay home & hopefully get after the QB on bootleg play-action. This is a large weapon for the hog-eyes, and it was the one thing (maybe only thing) Chizik's defense did well. The DE would stay home, then when the QB came on the boot after the fake handoff, the DE would explode to put pressure straight in the face of the QB. If QB has all kinds of time & room, we will be in trouble (most likely in seam with TEs, as I think our outside coverage will be pretty tight, in particular on McNutt).

The good thing is that depth will be better from here on out. And, they're going to have their better players available. Not to mention, there are probably only 2-3 more QBs on the schedule that would be considered "mobile" in the elusive sense. And only one that would compare with Rennie as far as being a running threat. I'll say that if the ISU DL gets to Vandenburg, you can bet he's going down. The guy is a statue compared to Rennie.

Of course, a key difference is that Vandenberg isn't a dual-threat QB. The guy has a really quick release AND he has quick feet. My bet is that Vandenberg will get the ball out sufficiently fast that it will be pretty difficult to sack him.

This x100000 we need to work on that, especially with iowa's play action, roll vandenburg out.. we cannot get sucked in.

I did like the way Rony Nelson played, granted he did seem out of position a few times. i think we will see a drastic impovement from week 1 to 2. maybe i'm drinking the kool-aide, but i think that we will give iowa all they can handle

Yeah, whoever made that decision to move Neal to DT rather than play Woods or Jensen overthought that one a bit.

I agree, I think it was kind of a scramble situation. Hopefully, we can be more prepared if it comes up again.

Typical, because he's white he's a smart football player. Neal gave up the edge everytime he could last year. Losing Maggit is bad.

Is Maggit out for good? Anyway to get him a medical redshirt?

From Cy Thoughts Iowa State Preview: This preview called it!

Remember the holes we need for our backs, well I saw those types of holes quite a bit last year, but a lot of times it wasn’t our backs taking advantage of them. Our defensive line has got to do a better job of stuffing the gaps. I really think this the area we are going to see the biggest leap from last year. If the line can take 40 combined tackles away from Jake Knott and A.J. Klein we will be okay. I think the x-factor is Jake McDonough. The kid looks like a beast and he has to play like one. Pressure on the quarterback is going to be huge as well if we want to be in every game and it needs to be consistent. We can’t allow quarterbacks like Landry Jones to have all day to throw because they will pick us apart.

Maggit's status has not been announced yet, he was removed from yesterday's depth chart, I believe he is eligible for med-RS if it is season ending.....

No, because he's a senior who's been around five years, he's a smart football player.

That and the fact that he has always played smart.

Accuse people of racism much?

No. He used his redshirt as a freshman.

He may eventually apply for a sixth year, but that's a long time away.

Most of UNI's offense came on either planned runs by the qb, or scrambles. Containment certainly would have helped, but that dude is elusive. I feel better about playing against a pocket qb with our defensive backfield. Hopefully we can get some coverage sacks.
