I officated HS football with a guy who often didn't want to shower after games. I always felt gross and wanted to shower before putting my street clothes back on.
He didn't smell that bad, but I thought it was odd.
Getting home at midnight, 1 AM, last thing I wanted to do was shower after getting home super late.

We didn't swim naked but had to line up in the pool area naked to get our school supplied swim suit. Early 80s.
All this talk of men's public showers reminds me of the good ole days when urinals in large public areas were essentially horse troughs. Males we're basically treated like animals while the females had private stalls for toilets and showers.
I have no idea other than the gym teacher being a perv. I don't know if girls had to do it too.
