The Register has had several articles about the Iowa baseball team in the last week or so.

it’s not asking too much that they cover Iowa state’s non revenue sports as well.

He is right on the nose with the abysmal coverage.

These morons originally wrote the tennis story as being our non-existent men’s tennis team.

Frankly don’t understand why they can’t pay the ISU Daily for coverage of non-revenue sports.

Do not lose sight of all the major high school events they failed to cover over the weekend as well, as JP mentioned. The athletic union sites are not the easiest to use. But how they can’t manage to publish state qualifying information at a minimum is beyond me.

I don’t need more Chad KF slobber year round on Hawk football. Cover the damn news.

I'll go ahead and assume some of the ex-ISU players, like Hanrahan, kept pushing the Reg for this story, gave contact info for other players, etc., and finally the Reg gave in. Easy content.

Yeah, maybe. In general, media covers what they think people will be interested in. It’s often a gamble. Murph and Andy had a good segment on it yesterday.

Ok to criticize the Register, but the cancel subscription language is going too far...
I would have sworn the baseball team was dropped 30 years ago and not 20, so what do I know.

I thought it was 1996, but a quick Google search brings up April 2, 2001.

Why didn't they run the article on April 2?

One of the things I love about JP is his candidness, so I try in general not to be too critical of when and how he uses it, even if I'm not sure I would have used his exact words at his exact moment. But yes, I do agree with his sentiment in general on ISU's media coverage. so he is at least fighting for a correct cause. Also, Tommy Birch's response is a lame one. Of course you devote the most resources to ISU sports of any media company in the state. Being only 30 miles from Ames, if you didn't devote the most resources, it would be a complete embarrassment. I'm sorry bud, but there are no pats of the back for clearing the lowest stupidity bar in one's job. If that is your standard, no wonder you are already failing.

I think his point is valid but his execution is off. Pushing the achievements of the track team and softball teams should be done. I have no problems with the retrospective of the baseball team, but save it for the summer when there's nothing else going on.

Here's a dumb question - how much time would it take to write a short article about the women's tennis team? Doesn't need to be a six page expose. Just some facts, talk about historic nature, etc. I mean, certainly someone has time to do that right? That's just an assumption though. And secondly, would that be worse than doing nothing?

well they did do worse than nothing when they copied the Iowa state press release on tennis but somehow managed to say it was men’s tennis.

JP has a history with the DMR. For years Iowa State content got stashed behind a firewall while Hawk Central was free. I remember him complaining about that a few years back. The DMR has always been an Iowa first paper which is hard to swallow because it's one of the few that even gives Iowa State decent coverage.

I’m surprised this didn’t get much more discussion in the softball thread. Curious what you guys think about it. I don’t have a problem with him calling out the register on coverage however, I thought it was petty to say this is why I cancelled years ago. They are already struggling enough without Jamie’s negative influence. Just another example of Jamie being thin skinned but don’t tell him that or you’ll be blocked on Twitter.

I love it. Jamie speaks his mind. Nothing wrong with that

I love Jamie's passion for ISU and wanting to stick up for the Cyclones. It would be nice if Jamie could be a little more diplomatic considering he is in the public eye and firmly represents the school. He can certainly air his displeasure as long as it's not too whiny or too frequent.

That being said, newspapers in general can be very biased on certain topics. Part of that is for ratings (circulation) and some is the belief system of the people that run the place. The days of covering topics objectively are long gone.

The Register has sucked for a long time now, and they keep proving it on a daily basis. The media in Iowa has always been pro Hoks for decades. I do think it's shifting a bit because ISU's success cannot be ignored any longer. In a perfect world, all the major universities should be covered equally but we know that is not the case.
