I don't expect much from Burton or Williams next year. Burton will have to make the mid-season adjustment like McKay did this year, but with a lot more competition for minutes at his position. Williams is coming off of a year-off and double shoulder surgery. Hopefully he can provide some post-defense and timely shooting, but I expect Edozie-type minutes for him. Remember, he's just going to be a sophomore. Getting those two guys enough experience to step into big-time roles the following season is all I expect.

Do they need to do that much though? Assuming a Diallo-less ISU team next year, I'd imagine that Nader probably gets the call to take over Hogue's starter spot, at least to start the year. So really, all the combination of Cooke/Williams/Burton needs to do is find a way to consistently reproduce the level of production we are seeing from BDJ and Nader now off the bench. That seems...pretty doable, right?

I would have no fear at all of the 16 seed.
Sure, it could happen, but not because we're Iowa State. That's over in basketball.

The Kansas State game begs to differ. Yuck!

But agree..that's mostly a football thing now.

Hallice Cooke is a HUGE addition to this squad as well. Don't forget that if Thomas keeps gaining more confidence, that's going to help a ton as well. I've also heard Darien Williams is a great player and Deonte Burton looks like that physical forward who will clean up the boards and get the garbage points that we need. With or without Diallo we are loaded next year. It's definitely a great time to be a Cyclone fan! Before we get too caught up in the hype for next year, let's focus on getting back to the Sweet 16 again and hopefully making it further then that.

Thomas, Cooke, and Naz would be a deadly trio of shooters rotating through the lineup.
I assume that Georges keeps improving, and that Williams is anything near his reputation. That's a deadly extra pair of shooters.
Add Monte to that mix, especially when he goes automatic in March. Custer ain't bad at the shooting, either.

That's 7 guys potentially in the rotation who are reliable three point shooters. That's a spacing nightmare for a defense, and really nice for McKay down low, and Burton on his thunderous drives to the hole.

Oh, absolutely. I wasn't intending to say they couldn't do more, just that the likely won't be asked to do more next year.

I expect Burton will be a Hogue-level shooter as well. He didn't shoot at Marquette, but he'll shoot here, and I think he'll make enough.

I am hopeful Burton can fill a role similar to BDJ, who has been more of a SF this year.

One of the biggest questions about the ability to go from good to elite is the recovery of Cooke and Williams IMO. Prior to significant surgeries Cooke was undoubtedly going to be a huge addition. We need another pg/primary ballhandler, and he gives that with the shooting of a great SG. If he has progressed from his very good freshman level, he is a difference maker.

Of course Diallo would really help fill the second weakness and make us an elite team. We would finally have adequate size and length. Off the court he would have an even bigger impact.

IIRC next year will be Fred's first year returning the leading scorer and we have two scholarships to add to an already very good core. Hail Hoiball.

I just....I just....I just wish we did it the right way...sad face.

I'm going to have to see it to believe it from Williams and Cooke, those guys have been off the court for a long time considering the surgeries.

2017 is their year to shine IMO.

Next year could be an even more epic battle for the Big 12 between ISU, KU, and Baylor given returning talent.
OU and WVU will be as big of threat as Baylor imo. WVU is essentially a system team now so the loss of Staten is mitigated and OU will have basically the same team that finished 2nd last year.

I don't expect much from Burton or Williams next year. Burton will have to make the mid-season adjustment like McKay did this year, but with a lot more competition for minutes at his position. Assuming no Diallo, at least one of those will get major minutes. Hogue and BDJ are leaving behind a lot of minutes. Yeah, Williams had surgery, but Cooke is recovering from more significant surgeries. Imo Thomas and Nader are not high enough minute/gm guys that keep Burton and Williams off the court, at least not on a team that lives up to the expectations in this thread.

With Niang, Morris, McKay all returning All Big-12 guys, and the rest of the returners and newbies, I fully expect Iowa State to be a potential top 5 pre-season with or without Diallo. Yo.
This. Big name ESPN writers have already said that without Diallo they wouldn't be surprised to see us preseason top 5.

That's not necessarily true. You still need things to align typically to make a Final Four run. Talent, depth, experience and leadership are the things you can control. Obviously there are other factors such that you can't control such as how your bracket shakes out, how talented other teams are, etc.

But some years you will have more things line up than others, and this year and next it seems like we have our best shot in the foreseeable future.

True...but it's funny how things tend to line up easier when you have talent AND a good coach.

McKay, Burton, Niang, Morris, Long, Thomas, Nader, Custer, Cooke, Tsalmpouris add in Diallo and we set for platoons :twitcy:

With Cooke transferring in, Thomas/Morris as a junior, and Long as senior. The back court will be a 3-pt threat like no other. Space that court up nicely, and with Georges Niang's ridiculous passing, spinning, and dribbling and McKay/Diallo up front. I am so amped for 2016 to begin. I see us definitely being a preseason top 20 or maybe a top 15 team at best.

Update completely forgot about Willams

OU loses Thomas which is a big loss. Also could lose Hield to the pros. That could really set them back. I'm not sure if they have anyone coming in but I know they didn't have a deep bench.

it would be surprising to see Hield stay.

I agree with most of this but we will be a preseason top 10 team. I think 4-8ish.
