Personally I felt it was an act.

I agree - it felt like the stares out at the audience and the looking down at his lap, etc. were acts. It's like when you watch a movie or play and you can see someone going through the process of acting - that's how it felt to me.

The people around him would NEVER allow him to go on Letterman if he was truely strung out and I doubt the Letterman people and network execs would allow it either. It's an act and it's had people talking about him for weeks...

But he had a few retorts that were way quicker than they would have been if he were stoned. I just think he's getting some free publicity.

To me it is an act. At the end of the clip I watched, he takes off the glasses, shakes Letterman' hand, and it sounds like he says "You did well".

That signals to me that he is telling Letterman that he did a god job ad libing to his acting.

Yeah Angie, but why would he need publicity? The guys already made a ton of money.

I just watched it again. That is a hilarious clip. Letterman really made hay.:biglaugh:

Dustinal nailed it. It's basically a reprisal of the faked Andy Kaufman Jerry Lawler fight. Dave was in on that one too.

You're right, he does - but nothing is a given in this economy. This month has been great for the box office, but I'm sure it's a ploy to make sure people get out to see his movie. It's been a few years since he had a big success, so he might just kind of be doing the "crazy like a fox" thing to put butts in the seats. I also don't trust anyone, so take my opinion for what it's worth.

I think so too. And it wouldn't be the first time an uncomfortable moment was staged on Letterman's show...

(Warning: Link contains profanity)

I hadn't seen that in forever. :notworthy:

It's all a joke/hoax, Casey Affleck's doing a documentary about a actor losing his mind and dropping off the map, going to be at Sundance for the hippies and mormans.

Untitled Joaquin Phoenix Documentary (2010)

I think Dave was in on it, and the crowd, or they wouldn't have been laughing like they were, and would have been scared to death instead.

FYI, I don't think there are many Mormons in Wyoming.

FWIW, Sundance is held in Park City, Utah. Salt Lake City has the largest Mormon population in the world which is only a mear 30 minutes away from Park City.

But the original post about Sundance being for hippies and Mormons is hilarious. I've been to Sundance three times and all it is empty ski slopes, movie stars and a lot of parties. Oh yeah, they show a few good movies as well. A lot of the years best films are premiered there.
