Watching the Marquette Creighton game last night I just kept thinking "Damn, I wish ISU could have landed Carton." That kid is damn good.

I wonder what his issue was that was bad enough for prohm / pollard to allegedly pass on taking him but was ok for woj and a Jesuit catholic university ?

Let's not pretend that we've been consistently getting Top 25 recruiting classes every year. Our recruiting is great for ISU, not the national level. That said, we've had a major identity problem every year. I'm not sure that anyone thinks that Steve is the long term answer but it's a lot harder to win here than our fans are willing to reckon with.

Yeah this is what I get frustrated with too. We seem to think we are great at shooting 3's lately and dig ourselves into big holes early then finally realize when it is too late we have some decent big guys that can make higher percentage shots or we can run some sets to drive to the paint and get better looks closer to the hoop. We have OK 3 point shooters but not the kinds of shooters that you can rely on most nights to consistently hit the 3's to play the live or die by the 3 like we have some years. Our best 3 point shooter last year was Haliburton at .419 then there was a huge drop off to Jackson and Bolton at .337 and .336. Nixon took the most 3's at 160 attempts yet only made them at a .262 clip. In 18-19 had some better options, Haliburton was the leader again at and had Wigginton and Shayok at .390 and .386 although THT was 2nd in attempts but converted them at a .308 clip. To me you have to go back to 16-17 when we had Thomas, Jackson, and Naz and even to an extent Monte and Burton where had several guys on the team I consider consistent 3 point shooters. Wigginton in 17-18 shot .401 but seemed to be a bit streaky at times.

I guess my point is there are games that I feel we do not play to our strengths and it will take us going 3-20 from 3 and down double digits before we decide to start driving to the hoop or running some offense out of the post and by then we've dug a big enough hole we can never get out of it. We have guys that are athletic and can create off the dribble and we also have had some decent size in the post too that can post up and score in some ways too. Defense too has always been frustrating at times because too many of these teams under Prohm just never fully bought into playing a full 40 on both ends of the court. When the game is close and the fans are loud they would dig in and play some tough D but other times you just shake your head at the wide open 3's we give up or missed assignments on a pick where the help never came and we give up some ridiculously easy baskets. Just too many things wrong and I do put that mostly on the coaching and game planning that we don't make adjustments sooner when it is painfully obvious at times what we are trying to do is just not going to happen in that game.

Took the words right out of my mouth - we make fun of Shaka for not being able to produce results with good talent. It seems oddly familiar.
Shaka has 4 and 5 star talent at every spot on his roster. Prohm has 3 and 4 stars on the roster. Kinda the same but not really.

The last line on quote above, anything to it and why? Always wondered why Greg McDermott could be so successful at Creighton after he couldn't do anything at ISU (apart from Doug). I can't figure it. Different kind of athlete needed for BIG 12. What does that mean really (heard it before).

Makes you wonder when/if Prohm leaves, goes elsewhere, will he then be very successful also?

He very well could be successful, but his success was recruiting an NBA point guard and winning with that in the Ohio Valley against teams that didn't have anything close to NBA talent.

Yeah man idk. I wasn't an ISU fan when McD was here so I can't speak on him. I just think that our fans greatly overestimate our talent level.

That's not a cop out for Prohm. We have the same problems every year. Our defense continues to be atrocious. We mindlessly throw the ball around the perimeter with no player movement to the point that our bigs don't know where and when to go. Our guards don't even consider entry passes so no one posts up. We don't have anyone who knows how to give or receive a screen. We don't know how to defend the PnR. I honestly couldn't tell you a single aspect of actual coaching that Prohm is above average at.

That's painful to say too.

Yep. Those of us who have been around here long enough remember the exact same excuses being used for GMac that we now see for Prohm. And the exact same kind of woe is us "we'll never get anyone better, iowa state can never expect better than garbage" responses.

Uh, I think bringing up McDermott actually is counterproductive to your argument. GMac is one of the best arguments for keeping Prohm in my mind.

While GMac had an uphill battle and every bad break imaginable, those of us who played a high enough level of basketball knew he was a good coach and would eventually develop a powerhouse. Albeit not at ISU, but GMac has shown he is an elite coach and developed a powerhouse. It would have only taken one good break (can you imagine what would have happened if Harrison Barnes and Dougie McBuckets would've played for ISU) for McDermott to be our coach right now and we'd have a perennial top 25 program.

If you must talk about He Who Left Us, I'll oblige. Am I glad Fred came and did what he did after we fired GMac? Absolutely. It was an unreal fun run.

Do I wish Fred would've seen ISU as his dream job rather than his stepping stone? Yep. We might have developed a sustainable dynasty like Coach Campbell may do if he stays.

Did he? Nope.

Do we need to move on? Yep.

So, in short, Fred, because of his priorities (not blaming him for his priorities, but they must be considered in the overall analysis of what ISU needs as the head of its basketball program), was not capable of doing what GMac has done at Creighton and hopefully what Prohm can do at ISU if given the chance.
