When we played his Toledo teams, they looked very sloppy and undisciplined in those games, so I wasn't wild about the hire. Those early games like UNI certainly helped reinforce that opinion for me.

I still find our special teams play and the number of bone headed penalties odd for a team that preaches about margins so much, but clearly CMC is the man for the job. The guy is on pace to have a statue outside the stadium one day.

After watching the "SOUL" video and reading some posts, I thought, hm, what about initially. Anyway, when CMC's hire was announced or even when you heard he was a candidate, go find your negative post [IF YOU HAD ONE] or summarize it so we all can make fun of you....just kidding. By the way, I OBVIOUSLY knew what the end result would be.:jimlad:

@tolfbfan

You were the biggest cheerleader for Campbell from the outset. "The Process, rah rah rah, blah, blah, blah." However, I don't recall even you predicting we would be this good so soon. Did even you undersell him? How about digging up a few of your first posts? Maybe you need to do some repenting too! ;)

P.S. Do you have plans to attend a game this season? Get your son lined up now.

I was originally on Fleck but once I saw more I didn’t want him.

I was a weirdo that kind of wanted Liepold but figured that jump would be a gamble. Since I’m a bit of a geek that used to follow lower divisions the Mt Union history was a big plus to me. My only worry was that I figured Toledo had a good advantage in recruiting vs most of the MAC.

I thought of Campbell as the safest choice that would have ISU in that 6-7 win range with consistency. Never imagined this. But they got so much better by the end of year 1 I started adjusting expectations up a bit. But more like maybe once every few years we could get 8 wins,9 if the planets aligned.

I don't think I had an immediate opinion....but his presser seemed to show a confidence and directness (and given his age, I liked that)....and hearing the story about when he was here with Toledo and he walked the tailgate lots/called his wife was one of those things that made it seem to me "this guy is built different"
I was very much like this except that Campbell's comment didn't just make him different than other coaches, it made him one of us. Play hard but play fair; play for the team instead of yourself. Take responsibility for your actions but be humble.

I don't know if we will have as much success next year because I think even Campbell would say we had some luck last year and we still have more work to do but that's just part of being "Process" successful rather than "Data-Point" successful.

CMC knows he's landed in the heart (and soul) of the midwest in Ames, Iowa. And like you, he'll stick to that.
He probably will because the heart and soul of this country is OH-IO. See what I did, soul...get it. We be quality fly over people here in the good old midwest State of OH-IO.

Take it's easy there buddy, I worked down in new Philly for a few weeks. That is some backwater Hicksville stuff you can't find in Iowa.
Well BUUUDDDDYYYY, if its within an hour of the river we say "those" people are hill-jacs who loaded up the truck in WV, Penn or Kentucky and drove north/west till the tank was empty. Not tru Oh-ioans. JUST KIDDING. Before the culture police cancels me, my wife's family did that. She was smart enough to latch onto this German stud.

Lol ya I get it. If we gave southern Iowa to Mizzery both state's IQ would go up.

I was stunned when my good buddy from back home moved to Bloomington, IN and I learned that people out there don’t really think of Iowa as Midwest. They think the Midwest ends at the Mississippi and everything west is Great Plains or something like that.

I think if you’re on eastern time you aren’t Midwestern

Interesting -- to me anyway -- is that when time zones were proposed, the Eastern time zone was somewhere east of Detroit. Henry Ford (and maybe others) lobbied successfully to move the Eastern Time Zone boundary westward so that Detroit and the auto companies could be in the same time zone as the banks in New York. This also pulled Cleveland and Toledo into the Eastern Time Zone.

Back then, I'm guessing that the Easterners (everybody east of the Appalachian Mountains thought everything west of the mountains was west which would have been subdivided into mid- and far-west.

Frankly I was in middle school before I learned that not everything east of the MIssissippi River was paved with concrete and filled with buildings and people but I do believe that major metropolitan areas like Chicago and Detroit are not Midwestern although outside those areas I have met many people that would fit into Midwestern culture exemplified by Iowans.

I feel I should bring this up, as I am not a forceful speaker for my faith like I should be. Last February I attended the Iowa Catholic Men's Conference in Des Moines. Matt Campbell was one of three keynote speaker (all three very impressive). Matt's placing his faith, family and others as being the most important things in life, makes me proud to be a Christian. I know that he keeps his players in very high regards.

Careful. We don't need another Jesus coach. Haha.

I remember being very skeptical when he was hired. I didn't know much about him, other than I thought we were still better than his best Toledo teams. I was in the camp that we needed to do something unique and different than the rest of the conference, like KState. I never imagined we could ever be on equal footings talent and depth wise like we are now. I thought his success was based on being more talented than MAC teams, and that that would never be the case here.
I also had a sour taste from Chizek bringing along his buddies to be coordinators.
I felt that first team had some potential, but would probably lose some they shouldn't while the coaches adjusted to P5. In short I thought he was in over his head, but was willing to give him a few years to figure it out.
I had heard so many excuses for so long about how hard it was to win at ISU that I believed it.

Well, putting me on the spot! I was confident in CMC and all his BUDDIES [a small jab at those who didn't like them all following him] who were going with him to ISU based on my sons and my interactions with them over five years. Since, I coached, they opened the doors more for me than just a typical parent. Which, by the way, I appreciated way more than they will ever know. I had the chance to watch some film with them a couple of times and they were willing to answer any football question I had. My other son attended a different school and I felt like they hated parents or probably thought of them as a necessary evil. I did not boast about how this program would be turned around in X amount of time. By watching most games, I could see parallels with Toledo's progress while he was OC and head coach at Toledo. I defended CMC and staff early and even up to this year about the Offensive line. I saw how long it took at Toledo, but my kids senior year [5 years] that line could of competed well against most anyone. Greg Manz currently in NFL. My biggest concern was ISU's football history. At first glance after his hire, I thought, "OH my GOSH" what was CMC thinking. Then, being the cocky OH-IOan that I am, I noticed Earl Bruce. That made me think that CMC had a good chance. Like us [mid-westerners-Ohioans] or not, a very large percentage of the winners either came from Ohio or came to coach in Ohio sometime during their career. I honestly thought he would average 7-8 wins per year. With a base of 6 and a high of 9. 10 wins would be an historical year and 5 wins would be caused by MAJOR injury issues. So. I don't know if I repented or not, but Ohioans who support CMC don't lie.

I was fine with the hire but watching that first season was probably as low as I've ever been as an ISU football fan. At least in the bad Chizik/CPR years you knew they'd be gone soon. I thought we were looking at the status quo for at least another 3-4 seasons.

I'd love to see someone find a bigger program 180 than that OU game.
Weird. I thought there was a lot of reason for optimism after that first year. September started ugly, but they played every game close the rest of the way other than WVU at the end. That team made strides throughout the year. It felt a lot like Fred’s first year. Just didn’t quite have the talent and depth to finish the close games.

I gotta admit I read the early posts by the OP so I think I knew exactly what to expect. He said the process would be tough at times but would pay off in the end. Was gonna take time to build the culture. I think those early posts were pretty spot on.

I think the fact that the OP was following CMC to ISU ie rooting for CMC and ISU, spoke to me as much as anything.
