I'll give you credit for being realistic about your Hawkeyes imo. I'm far from an expert but do watch some of your games, and agree that I think Jewell could be a good one. He was a great high school athlete that probably should have got a few more offers, and did pretty good for a rs freshman. I think you really got a good one in Boyle and assuming he'll red shirt, but I'm not going to be shocked if he gets there and is too good to redshirt, especially if there's an injury ahead of him. For Boyle's sake it's probably best if Ferentz is gone in the next couple of years, but of course as a Clone fan I hope he stays. Let's just say both of our coaches are justifiably on the hotseat.

Agree with everything here. I'm excited about Boyle. Glad he stuck with the Hawks, but it is a bit confusing to try to picture how Ferentz is going to use him. They've made it very clear he's a QB and he's going to be a QB. That intrigues me. I'm close with a coach of one of the Des Moines area schools who coached against Boyle and he was very impressed with him. Other than playing H.S. ball in Iowa there is absolutely nothing you can criticize him about in regards to his performance up to this point. He's done everything a kid could possibly do at his level of football. He completely dominated football in this state. I just hope Ferentz doesn't figure out a way to screw it up because it's hard to picture an athlete like him playing QB for Iowa. Brad Banks worked out. Hopefully Ferentz hasn't given up on that style completely. It's just been so long since we've seen that from an Iowa QB that it's hard for me to imagine.

Valley's head football coach Gary Swenson was the running backs coach for the East squad in this past US Army All American Bowl. He had the opportunity to see all of the Army All Americans practice and he had some nice things to say about Boyle. Here's some of his quotes:

Five of the six (quarterbacks) in the game were from California (or Florida) and they've played so much outdoor, year-round 7-on-7 and their concepts and fundamentals are so good," Swenson said."That's the difference between the Iowa kids at that position and those kids. They never flush, they stay in the pocket and their eyes are always downfield. They know right where to go with the ball."
Swenson has made no secret of the fact he's a fan of Iowa recruit Ryan Boyle, the Dowling Catholic quarterback Valley had to deal with throughout the past four seasons.
"I think Boyle could've fit right in on the roster with the other quarterbacks," Swenson said of a collection of decorated signal callers bound for USC, Oregon, Ohio State, Missouri and Arizona State.
"Physically, and from a leadership standpoint and an arm-strength standpoint, Ryan Boyle would've been right there with any of them, I think."

Boyle is the real deal. Too bad he's a squawk. He reminds me of Rosenfels. Sage was an elite athlete. Probably a better tennis player than he was a football player.

Good info. Definitely not your typical Iowa style qb, but like you said, Ferentz did make it work with Banks so maybe he can with Boyle too unless Kirk has got even more conservative and set in his ways since the Banks years. Not that I want him to be too successful.:skeptical:

How in the world did this tread degenerate into "be nice to Hawkeyes day?" Oh, I see, it is April Fool's Day. Carry on.

I think some fans of other teams come on here to talk football and are knowledgeable and reasonable about it, some come on here just to be herky jerks. As long as a hawk fan is trying to be reasonable and realistic, no reason to be uncivil and call them names. I have a lot of friends who are hawk fans and few are jerks about it.

Good post. I agree with everything that you said, but I would add one thing. A lot of the people who post on message boards are diehard fans. Which means you're talking about the guys and gals who will likely buy tickets no matter what. They care enough about the team to discuss them on a daily basis. The vast majority of people who buy tickets are not that type of fan. Which also means the vast majority are more prone to canceling their tickets if the product on the field doesn't start to represent a competitive football team.

I agree that Cyclone fans as a whole have been great these past few years. I think they've probably given Rhoads more support than he even deserves (that's just my opinion). However, if he doesn't turn things around quick I think a lot of them are to the point where they will walk away and stop spending their money. Not many on this site will do that, but like you said, the people on this site only represent a very small percentage of the fan base.

I think that you'll start seeing people walk away this season. Terrible results the past two plus the option of watching on TV. Tailgating and the new SEZ will buffer the loss somewhat, but overal sales are going to drop quite a bit. They have a chance to get those fans back with a good year, but I'm not counting on it. IMO talent level is VERY low.

So Ken Lynn a 5th year senior DB who has played a lot has switched positions because of the development of 2 RS Freshmen.

And you think the talent level is getting lower? That does not seem to be the case. Newcomers are beating out the players that played last year. Indicative of the talent level improving.

For as much as people say "Iowa State never recruits well"... well, they need to start finding a different recruiting strategy because schools down here are only getting more and more talent each year. If I was the AD at Iowa State, I'd be pressuring to have as many Texas, Georgia and Florida recruiters as possible. Kansas hired their new HC simply because of Texas A&M ties, and his ability to recruit in this state. As Johnny Orr always said, talent is 80% of the formula; coaching is 20%.
